Important Updates

Last week, the IRS extended the filing deadline for individual taxpayers to May 17th. As of right now, 1st quarter estimates are still due on April 15th. We are diligently working to finalize returns by April 15th to ensure that clients who need to make 1st quarter estimates have their vouchers prior to the deadline. That being said, we will continue to prepare returns in the order that we receive them. Thank you for your patience!

Michigan Announces State Tax Filing Extension

The Michigan Department of Treasury has extended the state filing deadline to May 17th, 2021 to match the new federal income tax deadline. The due date for 1st quarter estimates remains on April 15th.

Michigan Unemployment Compensation

The state has announced that the federal tax exemption of unemployment benefits will flow-through to Michigan returns. The Michigan Department of Treasury’s Taxpayer Advocate provided the following update:   There is no state-level deduction for the unemployment compensation relief provided by the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021. The federal exclusion of certain unemployment compensation will result in a lower federal AGI, which will flow-through to the Michigan return resulting in a lower “taxable income.” The state is asking taxpayers who have already filed to wait on filing any amended Michigan returns. We will notify you as soon as we receive further guidance.

Unemployment Benefits - Tax Waiver

On Tuesday, March 23rd, the IRS issued updated instructions on how to calculate eligibility for the unemployment tax waiver included in the American Rescue Plan Act. At this time, we are still unable to file returns impacted by this waiver. We remain in a holding pattern until we receive further guidance from the IRS and our software company. We ask for your continued patience as new developments continue to delay this process. We are suggesting that clients impacted by this waiver hold off on filing their returns until the guidelines are finalized. The IRS is still emphasizing that taxpayers who are impacted by this waiver and have already filed their return should not file an amended return.

Your Economic Impact Payments

Reminder: We need the amount you received in Economic Impact Payments (EIP1 & EIP2) before we can finalize your tax return. When you provide us with your documentation, please include detail for the payments that you received in 2020 and in early 2021.
