Fit To Recover would like to thank Mike Haws and Red Barn Academy

for their dedication and commitment to the Utah recovery community. Mike has been a supporter of FTR from the beginning. Mike has continually showed up and supported all of TeamFTR and those struggling with substance use disorders in Utah.

Gratefully, Mike extended his support to the students of Red Barn Academy who consistently show up and work hard (with a smile) at everything they do. Whether they are lifting a weight or a piece of furniture, these gentlemen never disappoint with their professionalism and positive attitudes. Thank you for the unconditional love and support from the beginning.

I came to Fit To Recover with a lot of anxiety about working out. I felt nervous about my physical capabilities.

When I got here, I heard gratitude and felt encouraged. I experienced compassion and empathy.

I've been attending regularly for a few weeks now and what I'm getting from FTR is a deepened level of recovery. I have more compassion for myself. I feel strong and mentally healthier!

Thank you for having FTR in my community

FTR Provides an environment that is rich in opportunities for growth.

The community Is there to support Me wherever I am in my life. It doesn’t matter if I'm doing well or struggling, they are there for me. I will be 4 years sober Feb 2nd and FTR has been with me the whole way. The Gratitude that we practice has had a profound effect on my growth. The creative Arts have been really important to me as well. I've learned That my creativity is and always has been a part of me and the illusion that I need drugs and alcohol to access it has been totally broken. I've made extraordinary progress with my social anxiety through the support of the FTR community and I'm truly grateful I found this amazing group of people.

Allison Sabo, SLC

FTR has helped me to grow in many ways. I started with fitness classes, rehabbing my back and elbow from injury. The fitness community supported me, and I wasn’t looked down on for taking things at my own pace, for not lifting heavy, and modifying movements. During warm up, I really explore the gym space by dancing or weaving through the rig and I don’t feel judged by others for choosing alternative cardio. The more I learned about the FTR Pillars the more I began to blossom. The Nutrition Pillar has offered a space where my cooking skills can be offered. I get to know people and assist in teaching them how to cook. The Creative Arts Pillar is where I believe I have grown the most. I explore my creativity at paint night and open mic. I feel loved and supported by the staff and community no matter how weird I get. The fitness classes drew me in and this led to the rest of the community. I am accepted no matter my skill level, mood, or appearance. I found my people.

NEW CLASS ALERT!!!

We want to introduce our new cooking for beginner's class. This class is for those looking to build confidence in the kitchen by learning basic cooking skills. Classes include reading a recipe, basic knife skills, building flavor profiles, using the oven, meal prepping basics, food handling & safety, etc. We hope to see you there!

Recipe of the month:

Shepards Pie

Serves 8

Ingredients

Mashed potatoes

•1.5 lbs. Potatoes

•1 head cauliflower

•3 Tbsp butter

•½ cup milk (more as needed)

Turkey Filling

•1.5 lbs. ground turkey

•4 oz mushrooms, finely chopped

•1 onion; diced

•2 carrots; diced

•2 celery stalks; diced

•1 Tbsp Italian seasoning

•¾ cup broth

•2 cloves garlic

•1 Tbsp tomato paste

•1 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce

•Salt and pepper

•1 bag frozen carrots & peas

Directions:

Cut cauliflower and potatoes into 2-inch chunks and add to instant pot. Add water to cover the bottom of the pot and avoid burning. Set too high for 15 minutes.

Prepare onion, carrots, celery, mushrooms, and garlic as directed. Add to pan and sauté over medium heat till softened. Add tomato paste and 2 tbsp of water and cook until incorporated. Remove from pan into bowl. Add turkey to pan with a bit of oil and cook until no longer pink. Add veggie back in. Add seasonings, Worcestershire sauce, and broth. Simmer uncovered until reduced by half.

In a large baking dish, add turkey filling followed by mashed potatoes. Cover with cheese and finish in over at 425°F for 15 minutes.

We’d like to give a special thanks to St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church for allowing us to serve our community by utilizing their kitchen for the past 8 month. You’ve allowed us to significantly expand our program. Thank you for your support.
