MassHealth - Medicaid 2023

A Message From Our CEO/President Anthony Falco:

As we have entered 2023 (!) it is becoming more and more difficult to get our seniors the help they need and paying for it. On February 8th, Senior Resource Center Inc. and Falco and Associates P.C. are holding a joint webinar titled "Seniors: How to Qualify, Get, and Use MassHealth-Medicaid While Protecting Your Assets” which will detail some of the current challenges and how to overcome them. Please stay tuned for more information on signing up.

In this newsletter, see 2023 MassHealth/Medicaid eligibility numbers for long term care (nursing homes), Minimum Monthly Maintenance Needs Allowance (if your spouse needs a nursing home, how can you keep some or all of his/her income to pay your expenses?) and community based eligibility numbers (how to bring services to the home and have MassHealth pay for them). Please know that at SRC, we can help you get long term benefits, income from a spouse, and community benefits.

As to other 2023 MassHealth updates, please know that MassHealth and the Commonwealth have proposed changes to "Pooled Trusts" 130 CMR 520.019 (D)(5) which would take away an important financial tool that allows some nursing home residents to cut their nursing home costs upwards of 50%. We are tracking this disturbing development.

Lastly, see a great new initiative by UMass Boston and The Commonwealth. Even when MassHealth is obtained, there may be a void in obtaining an appropriate caregiver as there is a clear shortfall of professional caregivers. The program is designed (and funded!) to train more caregivers. For younger people looking for a future career or for those looking for a career change or secondary career, with our rapidly growing aging population - caregiving is a needed and rewarding profession.
