Haywood Holy Ground Keepers
In humble awareness of the nuances of poverty, substance use, mental illness, and of the inaccessibility of waste disposal for many, all are invited to participate in a weekly community cleanup as we seek to care for our campus and neighborhood with compassion and dignity.
We meet in the Haywood Street parking lot on Tuesday mornings at 9:00 am weather permitting. From there, together, we will walk the grounds of the church campus and our local neighborhood — respectfully disposing of items that are no longer in use along the way and returning to campus by 10 am.
Supplies will be provided (e.g. bags, gloves, sharps containers, waste pickers), and, if possible, you are encouraged to wear closed-toed shoes.
For more information, feel free to contact Pastor Seth.

Haywood Street Community Development Updates | |
We're excited to share that the building is officially “dried in!" The roof is 92% complete; once fully complete, the gutters and downspouts will be installed. HVAC and electrical work are being done, and once this is complete, we will be ready for the Framing Inspection. On the exterior, the brick and Hardie Siding are going up.

| | Haywood Street Highlights | Happy Birthday to two of our amazing Wednesday Companions, JoAnn and Debbie! We love you both! | We are excited to be welcoming students from Asheville High School to learn about the Haywood Street Fresco over the next two weeks. The students will be accompanied by their teachers who were a part of a teaching institute focused on the fresco and hosted by UNCA in the summer of 2024. | | |

What Would You Have Me Do?
by Pastor Brian
March 26, 2025

In the panhandling district of Jericho, outside the city gate, blind Bartimaeus unfurls his beggar’s mat, situates his coin jar, and fixes his cloudy eyes on the foot traffic. After years with knees in the dirt, he knows the patterns: the mall shoppers are inclined to share their food court leftovers, the suits, if the market’s up, are good for a few dollars, and the publicly devout, wielding scripture swords, tend to be the worst.
As Passover pilgrims shuffle by, someone sneers, “Lazy bum. McDonald’s is hiring.” Ignoring the insults, Bart shouts back in another direction: “Son of David, HELP!” The crowd reacts, “Quiet! You can’t shakedown a Rabbi.” Despite the attempt to protect God from poverty, Jesus intervenes with an invitation. After hearing his name called, Bart drops his cloak, exposing his afflicted body, and shamelessly runs towards the voice.
Blindly feeling his way forward, reaching for his Savior in the dark, he arrives at the One he’s been urgently waiting for. Rather than ask Bart to fill out a health insurance form or conduct a needs assessment, Jesus defies expectations by asking a profoundly pastoral question, “What do you want?” Although no one had ever bothered to ask him before, Bart was prepared with an answer: new eyes.
