In July 2023, the Hamilton CMA saw a 0.3% increase in the unemployment rate to 5.3%, along with a 0.3% increase to the participation rate to 64.1%. Overall, Hamilton's labour force grew by 3,500 persons to 438,500.
In July 2023, Hamilton saw a jump in the number of youth entering the labour force. With a total labour force of 74,100. The youth participation rate increased drastically in July, increasing from 69.3% to 72.9%. As more youth are looking for work, the unemployment rate has similarly increased from 12.8% to 14.6%. Likewise, the youth employment rate increased from 60.4% to 62.2%.
In July 2023, the top growing industry in terms of employment for Ontario was Educational Services with 15,200 new workers. Following was Agriculture with 11,100 new workers and Manufacturing with 7,800. The top declining industry in terms of employment for Ontario was Public Administration with a loss of 15,800 workers, followed by Finance and Insurance with -11,800 and the Construction sector with a loss of 7,800.

YMCA: Free Mental Wellness Program | |
|
Y Mind is made up of two free groups: teens (13-18) and youth (18-30) who will be coming together to discuss everyday nerves, stress and worry in a safe and supportive environment. Our groups will be practicing mindfulness and ACT therapy-based techniques in order to cope with mild-moderate anxiety. These groups are currently online through Microsoft Teams.

YWCA Hamilton is offering the Construction Craft Worker Program for women, gender diverse people, persons who self-identify with disabilities and/or mental barriers, at no cost. Eligible participants will be provided with technical training and job coaching to start their career in the trades.
Program Overview
CONSTRUCTION CRAFT WORKER – SKILLS DEVELOPMENT
FOUNDATION
A Construction Craft Worker works on a wide variety of structures, such
as residential, industrial, commercial, and institutional sites as well as
hydroelectric dams, roadways, bridges, tunnels, mining and railways.
They may also work on utility, landscape and pipeline projects.
A CONSTRUCTION CRAFT WORKER:
- prepares and cleans up the site, sets up and removes access
- equipment and works on concrete, masonry, steel, wood and pre-cast
- erecting projects
- handles materials and equipment and performs demolition, excavation
- and compaction activities
- has responsibility for site security
- may specialize in operating off-road vehicles, drilling and blasting,
- scaling, sandblasting, high pressure washing, diving, tunneling and
- performing emergency rescue
SUCCESSFUL PARTICIPANTS MAY RECEIVE:
- Job readiness training
- 28 weeks of training which includes up to 8 weeks PAID placement
- Support for up to 12 certifications
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA:
- Women, gender diverse people, persons who self-identify with
- disabilities and/or mental health barriers, 18 years and older
- Resident of and able to work in Ontario
- A minimum of grade 10 high school education or its equivalent, and
- proof of a minimum of 16 credits
- Willing and able to commit to 28 weeks intensive training program
- Able to travel to training and work sites

Key takeaways from the Global Career Services Summit
The Global Career Services Summit (GCSS), held in March, brought together career thought leaders and employers from 18 countries to discuss critical issues affecting career centres and graduate recruitment. The event was hosted by the Careers Group at the University of London in England.
