Our Mission

Ignatians West is a community of mature adults rooted in Ignatian Spirituality. We share our skills, talents, experience, and hearts as part-time volunteers in nonprofit agencies. We assist and companion poor and marginalized persons, making real the transformative power of God’s love in both those who serve and those who are served.

Dear friends,

What a week!

We watched the world come together around sports as we cheered on soccer teams from countries far from our shores.

Yesterday, we celebrated 250 years as a nation with parades, barbecues, and fireworks. While we acknowledge the serious challenges we face, we also find reasons to celebrate. We remain hopeful people, committed to doing what is needed to restore peace and continue serving as a beacon of hope for others around the world. It will take courage, but with 250 years behind us, we have the will and the stamina.

Earlier this week, the Ignatian volunteers held their annual June retreat. Fr. Greg Boyle, SJ, founder of Homeboy Industries, guided the day. It was a day of hope. Fr. Greg challenged us as to whether we were people of invitation or people of indictment.

Fr. Greg talked of infinite welcoming and hospitality. I hold that our churches would be full if we understood hospitality and partnered it with synodality. If we invited people in, truly welcoming them, and then listened to them, we would be a church of “love your neighbor”, another idea Fr. Greg talked about.

Fr. Greg reminded us that authentic disciples are joyful, fearless and people who move forward. While our retreat day did not focus on July 4, these words speak to our times. We celebrate our 250 years and fearlessly move ahead in pursuit of the common good.

The Statue of Liberty has these words inscribed:

Give me your tired, your poor,

Your huddle masses yearning to breathe free,

The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.

Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me,

I lift my lamp beside the golden door!

In today’s gospel, we hear Jesus inviting us to, “Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened and I will give you rest.” There is a synchronicity to the message on our Statue of Liberty and these words of Jesus we hear today. They are words of caring, words of hope and sanctuary. They are words of welcome.

Let us be advocates for a welcoming church and a welcoming country.

Peace,

Anne

Ignatians West June retreat Day

Our retreat day was wonderful in so many ways. Fr. Greg Boyle kept us captivated and inspired.

His work with people on the margins, many of whom are former gang members, gives him a unique perspective that is full of love and acceptance.

The day was a great collaboration with Loyola High School and Homeboy Industries and an opportunity to welcome community members and guests of our volunteers.

Summer Blanket Project

Please join us on this project. We will be meeting in Los Angeles on August 1, and a date in Orange County will be determined. More details will be sent out in our next newsletter.

This is a great project for teenagers, so if you have one or your parish has a youth group, please let them know about our project.

Please join us for an in-person Summer Bible Watch Party we’re hosting at Loyola Marymount University on Saturday, July 18, 2026 from 9AM–3:30PM. The event is FREE and facilitated by Catholic Bible Institute (CBI).

CBI’s Summer Bible Week ‘26 theme is “The Spirit of the Lord is Upon Me” taken from Luke 4:18–19 in which Jesus announces himself as fulfillment of the promise of true freedom offered to us by a life lived according to God.

Join us on July 18 in University Hall 1866 as we watch that day’s teaching—entitled “The Spirit of the Lord is Upon All of Us!”—and engage in reflections together. Drinks and light refreshments will be provided. Click here for more information and here to register.

Note: CBI will also be hosting four virtual teachings throughout Bible Week via Zoom; we encourage you to watch them on your own to engage in the week’s full offerings. You can view the week's full schedule below.
