What a week!
April 30, 2021

Wow! This was quite a busy week in Salem. The week began with the House passing a slate of public safety bills and the official announcement that Oregon will be gaining a sixth Congressional seat. With so many big moments occurring this week, it was hard to find just a couple to highlight, but here we go!

To start with some positive news, I was honored to join Travis Boersma and testify in favor of Senate Bill 165 regarding legislation that will streamline the process for payments made by race meet operators. I expect this bill to pass the House floor overwhelmingly next week.

Yesterday, after a two and half hour debate, the House passed Senate Bill 554, a controversial bill about gun restrictions. I voted "no" on this bill because I believe it will do more harm than good for Josephine County where we have longer response times from law enforcement. I fully support responsible gun ownership but “reasonable efforts” to safely store a firearm does not remove liability from an owner who has their firearm stolen and makes a victim a criminal. I spoke out against this bill during the House Rules Committee hearing and on the House floor.

Today, Josephine County enters into the "extreme risk" tier of COVID restrictions. I joined four other Southern Oregon legislators in sending a letter to Governor Brown yesterday insisting that she lift this additional burden. I will continue to advocate for our local businesses and students as well as the safety of all our citizens.
All my best,
