What about My Past?
One of the great truths Jesus unveils to us is in the story of the prodigal son. We see the gospel is not about our past but our future with a kind and loving heavenly Father. The happiest person at the homecoming celebration wasn't the newly restored and forgiven son but his father. The critical, fault-finding brother missed the party because he was busy working for what the Prodigal was receiving through his father’s unconditional love.
This story highlights the danger of legalism, which blinds and distorts one’s understanding of the heart of God. While love reveals the heart of God and changes the heart of the one who experiences it, the legalist resists the love God offers us all freely and tries to earn God’s love through his good works.
Don't miss the party God has for you because of your past! Why remember what God has forgotten?
“For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more” (Hebrews 8:12).
“God does not treat us as our sins deserve or repay us according to our iniquities” (Psalm 103:10).
