Modules (Solar Panels)
- Why critical: They make up the most significant portion of CapEx, directly impacting system efficiency, energy yield, and long-term reliability. Choosing Tier-1 bankable manufacturers reduces the risk of underperformance, warranty disputes, and financing challenges.
2. Inverters (String, Central, or Micro)
- Why critical: Inverters are the “brains” of the system, converting DC to AC. They also manage grid compliance, monitoring, and safety shutdowns. A failed inverter can significantly impact production, so brand, reliability, and warranty are significant factors.
3. Energy Storage (Batteries)
- Why critical: Increasingly central in utility and C&I projects for load shifting and resiliency. Chemistry (lithium-iron phosphate vs. NMC), cycle life, safety certifications, and integration with inverters define project bankability.
4. Balance of System (BOS: Racking, Wiring, Switchgear, Transformers)
- Why critical: Often overlooked but essential for cost, performance, and installation speed. Poor-quality racking or cables can drive up O&M costs and create failure points. BOS decisions also affect labor costs and project schedules.
Beyond the equipment itself, two cross-cutting purchase criteria matter:
- Bankability & Warranty Backing: Investors and lenders want to know the manufacturer will still be around in 10–25 years to honor warranties.
- Supply Chain & Logistics: Availability, shipping reliability, and tariffs can change landed costs by double-digit percentages.
In short, purchasing solar equipment is critical because every component affects either project economics (CAPEX, IRR, payback) or project risk (technical, operational, financial).
Video clips of the factory visit.
If you would like to view video clips and photographs of some of the factories, Unicorn Solar will upload them to its website within a few days. Please get in touch with us directly; we will be happy to share them with you. Here is the first video from Robert's trip:
