What do you have to be Thankful for?

"Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more . It turns denial into acceptance, chaos into order, confusion to clarity. It can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home and a stranger into a friend. - Melody Beattie, author

"Gratitude is the sign of a noble soul." - Aesop, Greek Author

We often think of November and Thanksgiving as the time to be thankful, so many of us rarely practice this on a daily basis. We spend most of our time focusing on what we don't have and taking for granted all that we have.

Marketing and social media are constantly telling us our lives are not complete unless we have the next new thing, or that we are not good enough just the way we are.

Our happiness depends on our being thankful everyday for what we have but that can be really hard to do when we live in a world where we are bombarded with things we think we need to feel fulfilled.

How can being thankful improve your Life?

Definition of Thankful: Glad that something has happened or not happened, that something or someone exists.

Definition of Gratitude: Feeling appreciation or thanks.

These words are interchangeable as they both express the same feeling and have the same impact on our lives; improved health!

But how will you benefit from being thankful or expressing gratitude?
  • Expressing gratitude improves mental health by reducing toxic emotions like regret, frustration, resentment and envy.
  • Gratitude can reduce aggression even in the face of unkindness from others because you are less likely to retaliate and seek revenge.
  • Improve your sleep by keeping a gratitude journal and putting down some thankful thoughts before bed each night.
  • Gratitude improves self-esteem by reducing social comparisons and resentment toward those you might perceive to have more than you.
  • Gratitude reduces stress and plays a big role in helping to overcome major trauma by increasing resilience.
  • When you practice an attitude of gratitude you are more likely to take care of your health.
The good news is our overall happiness levels can dramatically improve in just one week by practicing some simple exercises.

How to practice an Attitude of Gratitude!

Step 1: Keep a gratitude journal, not just at night, but throughout your day.  Write down each time something good happens. Write down how these events had a positive impact on your day. You can reflect back on your day before bed and add new things you are thankful for.

Step 2: Expressing gratitude to others will also make you happier and healthier because you are focusing on the positive impact others have in your life rather than those that do not.  This will help you to nurture powerful relationships too. Is there someone in your life who did something wonderful or special for you and you never properly thanked them?  Try this exercise:
  • In a letter write down exactly what they did and the specific effect it had on your life.
  • Hand write the letter, be creative.
  • Write it many times until it is very powerful and concise.
  • Meet with the person face to face and read them the letter.  Tears may flow!!
Step 3: We all make mistakes because nobody is perfect; so have you ever thought of being thankful for those mistakes? See them as an opportunity to grow and learn; express gratitude for the lesson.  Rather than being regretful, try digging deep and looking for the lesson you learned and then see if you can laugh about your mistake.

Step 4: This is probably the most important expression of gratitude; be thankful for who you are, for all the qualities that go into making you, you!  Think of these qualities as your signature strengths.  Here are some that might describe you:
  • Love, Hope, Kindness, Fairness, Integrity, Bravery
  • Humor, Creativity, Curiosity, Persistence, Perspective, Vitality
  • Leadership, Citizenship, Social Intelligence, Love of Learning, Open-mindedness
  • Prudence, Humility/Modesty, Forgiveness and Mercy, Gratitude, Spirituality, Appreciation of Beauty
