Church family, are we living into our vision? Are we striving to meet our mission? If not, why not? and how can we reach the goals we have set for ourselves both personally and collectively?

The passages for this Sunday mark a major turning point in the Gospels. Jesus transitions from a solitary ministry to commissioning His 12 disciples. He equips them with authority to preach and heal, fundamentally redefining discipleship as an active, compassionate participation in restoring the broken and marginalized.

1. The Plight of the Crowd (Matthew 9:35-38)

  • Holistic Ministry: Jesus’ work combines teaching, preaching the good news, and physically healing every sickness.
  • Deep Compassion: Jesus is moved to His core because the crowds are "harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd".
  • The Harvest: Jesus states the harvest is plentiful but the workers are few, prompting Him to tell the disciples to pray to the Lord for more laborers.

2. Commissioning the Twelve (Matthew 10:1-4)

  • Empowerment: Jesus directly calls His twelve disciples (including Peter, Andrew, James, John, and Judas Iscariot) and gives them authority over unclean spirits to heal and cast out demons.
  • The Calling: They are sent out to actively do the same restorative work they had seen Jesus doing.

3. The Mission and Message (Matthew 10:5-8)

  • Targeted Audience: Initially, Jesus restricts their mission specifically to the "lost sheep of the house of Israel," prioritizing their own communities first.
  • The Message: They are to proclaim that "the kingdom of heaven has come near".
  • Miraculous Action: This proclamation is partnered with tangible acts of restoration: curing the sick, cleansing lepers, raising the dead, and casting out demons.
  • Freely Give: The disciples are commanded to pass on these miraculous gifts of grace as freely as they received them.

4. Instructions on Reliance (Matthew 10:9-23)

  • Total Trust: The disciples are told to take no money, bags, or extra tunics, teaching them to rely entirely on the hospitality of the communities they serve.
  • Anticipating Persecution: Jesus does not promise a safe or easy path. He warns them they will face hostility, be dragged before governors and kings, and even be betrayed by their own families.
  • Divine Guidance: They are instructed not to worry about what to say when confronted, as the Holy Spirit will provide the words to speak.
