Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper February 17th

Ash Wednesday Service

February 18th

6:00 PM

Shrove Tuesday, also known as Pancake Day or Mardi Gras, is the final day of feasting and indulgence before the Christian season of Lent begins, a 40-day period of fasting and reflection leading to Easter. It's celebrated by using up rich foods like eggs, butter, and sugar to make pancakes (hence "Pancake Day") or other rich treats, while its name comes from the Old English "shrive," meaning to confess sins before the solemnity of Lent.

Ash Wednesday is Feb. 18, 2026. It is calculated to take place 40 days before Easter (not counting Sundays.) Ash Wednesday is a day of repentance, marked by ashes being placed on a worshiper's forehead in the shape of a cross by a priest, pastor or minister during church services. Ashes are a symbol of penance.

The Season of Epiphany

For the 6th Sunday after Epiphany, Year A (Feb 15, 2026), the season after the Epiphany ends in glory, with Jesus revealed once more as Christ. There are many epiphanies within the season: the visit of the magi, the presentation of Jesus in the temple (and Simeon’s response), the Lord’s baptism, his first miracle at Cana. On this Sunday, the last of the Epiphany season before Ash Wednesday takes us into Lent, we see Christ in all his glory, his transfiguration, atop the mountain.

We celebrate the Transfiguration twice each year: on the Last Sunday after the Epiphany, and on the feast day itself, August 6.

Key Points and Details for February 15, 2026:

  • Thematic Focus: The Transfiguration (Jesus' face shining like the sun, clothes dazzling white) and the revelation of him as the beloved Son of God.
  • Significance: It serves as a transition from revealing Christ’s glory to preparing for his journey toward the Passion (Lent).
  • Lectionary Readings (Year A):
  • Gospel: Matthew 17:1-9 (Transfiguration).
  • Old Testament: Exodus 34:29-35 (Moses' face shines).
  • Epistle: 2 Peter 1:16-21 (Eyewitness to the majesty).
  • Psalm: Psalm 99.
  • Themes in Preaching: The call to listen to Jesus ("Listen to him!"), The strengthening of faith to bear the cross, and the anticipation of the future glory of Christ.
  • Liturgical Color: White or Gold.

This day connects the manifestation of Christ to the world (Epiphany) with his ultimate glorification, setting the stage for the solemnity of Ash Wednesday (Feb 18, 2026).

Thank you to everyone for making our Annual Meeting and fellowship successful. We make a great team! As a result, we are officially changing the service hours.
