Greetings!
As we head towards Memorial Day, may we all enjoy hugging our family members and laughing with our friends. May we also remember what Memorial Day is? A day for all of us to reflect on the sacrifices on the battlefield.
The idea for a specific Memorial Day holiday is often credited to General John A. Logan, the commander-in-chief of a veterans' group called the Grand Army of the Republic. He issued a decree establishing what was then called "Decoration Day" on May 30, 1868. The date was chosen because it wasn't the anniversary of a specific battle of the Civil War, providing an opportunity for Americans to honor all who have died in service.
Official recognition of Memorial Day began in New York in 1873 when many businesses closed, and residents flew flags at half-staff to honor the local soldiers and sailors who had fought in the Civil War. Then in 1971, Congress made Memorial Day an official federal holiday to be observed and remembered by the nation.
So on this Memorial Day, let us all take a few moments to be grateful for what we have in our lives and reflect with gratitude for a few moments, to remember and honor our silent heroes who have shaped our nation.
Today and every day, we remember and thank them for their service to our nation! And may they all Rest in Peace.
My very best wishes to you and your family,
Douglas
