Water You Doing to Help?

A Message from Executive Director Katy Acheson

As a kid growing up in the 1980's, water conservation was one of my guiding survival principals alongside avoiding poison ivy and bee stings. There was the song "Don't Waste Water" and this classic cartoon that solidified my devotion to water conservation for my own sake and the sake of all aquatic animals.

As an adult, I still instinctively turn the water off while I brush my teeth. But that's not enough to combat the drought conditions we find ourselves in more and more frequently. If you can afford a high efficiency washing machine or dishwasher, that's great! Tax free weekend is usually mid-August, so start researching new appliances now.

Water conservation doesn't have to cost anything, though. We can simply limit our day-to-day uses. For example, friends and family will still visit if you don't water your lawn or if your car has pollen on it for a little while. They probably won't even notice if we're really honest with ourselves. There are more suggestions following my note here that I hope you'll try.

From your backyard to the bay, you have an impact. Thank you for doing your part to help us make Cape Cod and the surrounding region a beacon for climate positive action.

With love,

Katy

Elliot Rappaport, a professional captain of traditional sailing ships, has spent three decades at sea, where understanding weather is crucial to the safety of vessels and their crews. In Reading the Glass, he offers a sailor’s-eye view of the moving parts of our atmosphere and unveils the larger patterns it holds: global winds, storms, air masses, jet streams, and the longer arc of our climate.
