Exploring New Ground

Dear Friends,

Our Associate Director, Caroline Copeland, is turning over new ground with her research into dances of the late 18th century as they were danced in balls, public halls and drinking places frequented by the Black community in London. She has also been commissioned by Julliard to create a new choreography and in June she will be appearing in a special concert with NYBDC dancer, Olsi Gjeci, at the Boston Early Music Festival. We hope you can catch a glimpse of her artistry at one of these events!

Have a wonderful Spring,

Catherine

Dancing in the era of Ignatius Sancho (1729-1789): An Interdisciplinary Educational Project

Who is Ignatius Sancho? Born into slavery, Ignatius Sancho (c.1729–1780) became a butler, shopkeeper, and musician, as well as a published writer and composer. He used the arts to disrupt bias, promote antiracism as well as to provide enjoyment to his family, patrons, and friends.

Inspired by the music of Ignatius Sancho and brief descriptions of the all black balls of London, Caroline Copeland is embarking on a research project with collaborators across music and dance disciplines to uncover dance and music practices in England, United States, and the Caribbean
