Ask not what your country can do for you -- ask what you can do for your country.
-John F. Kennedy

I love this quote!  If you would change the word country to marriage, family, job, or community, I would guess that there would be a greater percentage of happiness, profitability, and beauty in our lives.

Let me ask, what do you do for your community?  What do you love about your community that you would hate to see disappear?  Maybe it would be businesses, schools, churches, a library, parks, beaches, or recreational areas.  What would you love to see in your community that doesn't exist?  Maybe a thriving Main Street, a farmers' market, outdoor amphitheater, dog park, city wide walking paths, or more shopping opportunities are on your list.

As Chamber President, I am frequently informed about the needs and wants of the community.  What is absent from these conversations is the business plan that needs to accompany the idea.  There must also be a business plan to maintain the events and assets that we presently have.

How do we continue to retain our community's events and resources, and how do we develop new opportunities?  With change being a constant in life, we need to change the way we think about our small community's future in order to move forward.  What people are looking for in small communities is livability.  They are looking for a community with a nice balance of affordable cost of living, safety, low crime rates, education, amenities, recreation, and beauty. It is vital for a small community's survival to offer these factors.  In the past, the rule of thumb to achieve success was having land, labor, and capital. This is not true today.  There is a missing element in achieving success, it's called creativity.

Creativity is the element that makes it all happen. Creativity will put the land, labor, and capital in motion and keep it in motion. Creativity also promotes gathering and education. A community that works together builds a healthier community.

So I ask, "What can you do for your community to sustain livability?"

Build a stronger local economy by shopping locally.
