Each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15, by celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America.The day of September 15 is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September 18, respectively.

The Hispanic-American community has left an indelible mark on the U.S. culture and economy. Hispanic Americans have been integral to the prosperity of the U.S., and they embody the best of American values. In 1777, the Spanish governor of Louisiana, Bernardo de Gálvez, joined General George Washington's fight against British soldiers and helped win independence. Over 300,000 Latinos enlisted in the American military and fight in World War II. At over 62 million people, the Hispanic population makes it the largest ethnic minority in the United States.

The observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period. If you’re a student, check out the scholarships available for Hispanic students.
