MEMBERSHIP EDITION, Vol. 4, #2

The 10-Minute Meeting
You have an opportunity to keep members in the loop AND respect their time by holding 10-minute meetings! It's also a great time to get feedback from people in the building.

Get out there and BE VISIBLE!

The October 10-Minute Meeting topic:
What is Collective Bargaining?
We had it before Act 10.
Act 10 took it away.

Since 2011, many Wisconsin educational employees have come and gone and the newest employees may have no experience or understanding of what was lost.

Instead of trying to define it, why not ask people what they think it is?
At the 2019 WEAC RA, the body passed a new business item #9 to restore collective bargaining to public sector employees. A statewide committee with representatives from each Region and Urban is being formed to develop and implement a strategy to fulfill the charge of NBI #9. It will be good to know what our members and our potential members think is important about restoring collective bargaining.

You are encouraged to hold a 10-minute meeting in your buildings to get feedback from all the teachers and ESPs. Have them answer these questions:
  • What is your definition collective bargaining?
  • Does it have to return exactly as it was?
  • What issues are the most important to include as mandatory subjects of collective bargaining?
  • How do we prioritize our interests if collective bargaining is reinstated in some form?
  • What are you willing to do to get collective bargaining back?

Send your results to the WR3 Legislative Committee by emailing [email protected] .

Professional Development
Region 3 is planning a professional development conference for Saturday, January 25th. (In case it matters to you, this is a bye weekend between NFL playoffs and the Super Bowl!) It will be the 2nd year of sharing best practices and learning new skills - - member to member!

Last year's conference included sessions such as "Mindfulness for Teachers and ESP," "GaGa for Google Classroom," "Special Ed. Law and Violent Students," "Managing Student Behaviors," and "Beating Back the Bully Principal."

Now's the time for you to think about topics that YOU would be willing to present! Fill out the Call for Proposals form and help us fill the agenda for this great event. Fun Fact: Presenters get a $200 stipend!
Comments from last year:

Very informative. Very relatable presenter. Thanks!!

This was great. I learned a lot and it was very helpful!

Got more out of this class than I have in all my other classes I have taken.
What is Power?

This is the fundamental question that will be the focus of our UP Connection on Saturday, November 16th.

We'll be breaking the tradition of a fall Presidents/Leaders meeting - a meeting with an agenda and minutes and Robert's Rules of Order where people like you come to hear about what's going on in the union world. A traditional meeting where you "sit and get" and hopefully have some time to network with colleagues about the state of your school district compared to others.

We'll be breaking that tradition and instead offering LEARNING opportunities for not just Presidents, but for everyone who wants more out of their union experience.

We are planning interactive sessions, panel discussions with people actively working on membership drives, and ZONE conversations. And we'll feed you lunch.

What is power? Come to the WR3 office to join in the discussion!

Peace,
