Psychodrama is one of the oldest group therapies, developed in 1921 by Jacob Moreno. Moreno used a triadic system – sociometry, psychodrama, and group psychotherapy – each of which parts can be effective in addressing complex trauma. Many traumatic memories revolved around relational trauma – harm caused by someone with whom we have a significant relationship with (parents, partners, children, etc.). Psychodrama provides complex trauma survivors with significantly opportunities to renegotiate relational trauma and offer corrective experiences.

Rooted in spontaneity and creativity, each session is improvised and co-created between client and therapist. Psychodrama allows us to go beyond talking about an issue or healing, and instead to talk directly to the people or parts of self-related to the trauma or healing. For example, in psychodrama, we could have a conversation with our courage to connect more with it, or we could have a discussion with the wall we put up to protect ourselves, or we could have closure with a loved-one who died, or express anger to someone who hurt us.

Psychodrama allows us to travel through time and talk to ourselves as a child to offer protection or nurturing – or travel into the future to strengthen a vision of ourselves related to our healing goals. Psychodrama can also be used to practice or rehearse for future situations that we expect to find ourselves in. We have several therapists on our team that integrate Psychodrama into their practice. Our Director, Dr. Scott Giacomucci is a Board-Certified Psychodrama Trainer and provides regular Psychodrama training for our team and outside professionals.

In Person and Virtual Sessions Available

We currently have openings for individual therapy with many of our clinicians, all with immediate openings. To get started, simply schedule an intake call, or give us a call. Our Manager of Community Relationships is there to help you navigate your choices. From there, you will have an opportunity to speak with your selected therapist for a free consultation call prior to scheduling your first session.

Thank you for choosing us as a provider for your client(s). We frequently provide adjunctive services for clients of other therapists as they continue to meet with their original primary therapist. Often this is in the form of EMDR or IFS sessions, psychodrama intensives, expressive arts therapy, group therapy, and/or couples/family therapy.

We want to ensure that your client feels safe, seen, and heard throughout the referral process. Additionally, we want you, as the referring provider, to feel comfortable entrusting us with their care. Our Manager of Community Relationships is available to speak with you before a referral to answer any questions you may have. We can also discuss the available therapists and your clinical recommendations.

Therapy Groups

Sessions will be facilitated with an emphasis on safety, building strengths, and empowering participants to put change into action. Group sessions will include various embodied and experiential forms of therapy that allow us to move beyond words or narratives. Instead of an emphasis on retelling trauma stories, we will build the strengths necessary to change how trauma lives within us and alter the trajectories of our lives going forward.

Intensive Sessions

Intensives, which can range from several hours to multiple days, offer a safe and contained space for individuals to engage with their trauma and explore the associated emotions and memories. In weekly sessions, there is a natural warming up and cooling down process that happens each session, which limits the amount of time available for trauma processing. In a focused 4-hour intensive, we might be able to realistically accomplish what would take 8-10 weeks of weekly hour sessions. This means you can receive treatment quicker and save money in the long run. This compacted schedule allows clients to make rapid progress and experience substantial shifts in their healing journey.

Music Therapy and Trauma

By: Meryl Lammers, MT-BC (Music Therapist-Board Certified)

Music therapists use music to enhance social or interpersonal, emotional, cognitive, and behavioral functioning in individuals who have experienced trauma. Research indicates that music therapy is effective at reducing muscle tension and anxiety, and at promoting relaxation, verbalization, interpersonal relationships, and a sense of connectedness. This can set the stage for open communication and provide a starting place for non-threatening support and processing symptoms associated with or exacerbated by trauma.

Parental Stress and Trauma

By: Meryl Lammers, LSW, MT-BC

In August of 2024, the acting Surgeon General, Vivek H. Murthy, issued an advisory on the health and well-being of parents in the United States. This advisory called attention to the growing rates of stress experienced by parents and the direct impact that stress has on childhood development and well-being. Parental stress, coupled with trauma can be a particularly challenging experience.

The stress of parenting, including challenges like child behavior, sleep deprivation, and financial strain, can act as a trigger for past traumatic experiences.
