LRAC August Art Headlines
Hot New Ideas Introduced in Aug.

LRAC launches two new programs.

August may signal the end of summer but, here at LRAC, it is the beginning of a new year. This month I am excited to share with you, two new LRAC projects.

LRAC will launch the new Arts Resource Expert program by hiring Jacinta Zens as our first Arts Resource Expert. Please see Arts Resource Expert article below for more details.

LRAC will also kick off our new Equitable Access program, designed to remove barriers for accessing LRAC grants and services. LRAC wants to make sure grants and services are available regardless of national origin, race, color, creed, religion, disability, gender, status with regard to public assistance, gender preference, marital status or political affiliation.

Based on the demographics of our region, we will be focusing on connections with the Native American arts community.

We also have a fresh new look at the LRAC4.org website. Keep checking our Facebook page for more updates.

Jacinta Zens,
LRAC Arts Resource Expert
New Arts Resource Expert Program

This year LRAC artists asked for more one on one support to help connect them with opportunities for grants, exhibition/performances, workshops, and collaborations.

We are responding by hiring Jacinta Zens as our first Arts Resource Expert. Jacinta's only job at LRAC will be to meet with artists, identify their needs and connect them to the best resources.

To increase accessibility, the Arts Resource Expert will be meeting with artists at locations throughout the Region.

Jacinta has helped in the development and organization of successful LRAC Arts Resource Fairs in 2014 and 2016. She has a long history of building connections between artists and opportunities. She also has experience promoting and organizing events.

This first year, as we develop the Artist Resource Expert program we will work with a cohort of 10 artists. Cohort artists will meet the criteria of geographic representation in the 9 county LRAC area, representation of artistic disciplines and commitment to their art.  After the first year, the program will expand beyond a limited cohort. Keep in mind that the Springboard for the Arts, Lake Region office will continue to offer Career Consultations and is an excellent resource for artists in our region.

Dr. Leigh G. Wakefield
Featured Artist

Dr. Leigh G. Wakefield
Associate Professor, Clarinet, Woodwinds Method
Concordia College, Moorhead
(218) 299-4847

Dr. Leigh G. Wakefield can still recall that fall afternoon in 5th grade when he got his clarinet. Perhaps this is why he is spending his summer mentoring Jenna Hogetvedt, a high school student from Ulen-Hitterdal. Her high school teachers are excited for Jenna  to study under Wakefield, and LRAC believes she shares Wakefield's passion of playing and studying the clarinet.

Wakefield performed as principal clarinetist in the New Bedford Symphony and the Nashua Symphony, as well as being an active chamber musician in the Boston area.  Currently he is principal clarinetist with the Fargo-Moorhead Symphony Orchestra, the Fargo-Moorhead Opera Company, and a member of the Fargo-Moorhead Symphony Wind Quintet, Concordia Wind Trio and Concordia Wind Quintet.  Dr. Wakefield has performed at a variety of national and regional music festivals including appearances at the International Clarinet Fest, the International Double Reed Society convention and the Minnesota Music Educators convention.  Dr. Wakefield is an Associate Professor of Music at Concordia College, Moorhead, Minnesota, where he is the Professor of clarinet, chamber music and woodwind methods.  During his nineteen years at the college he has also been conductor of the Concordia College Cobber Band and the Concordia Jazz Ensemble.  A firm believer in music education and the power of music to influence people's lives, he has served as a frequent adjudicator, clinician and guest conductor.
