This Sunday, Deon Hull, who serves on our Oklahoma District Mission Team, will be visiting Messiah after late service to give us a chance to learn the basics of how the game of Dartball is played and to play a game or two.

Deon will also be discussing:
- The Mission of the Dartball League
- How we can introduce people to Messiah through the Dartball program.
- People and resources needed for a team.
- The process of getting a team started.

Stick around after church this Sunday and check it out!!!!  Below is some basic information from Deon about Dartball:

What is Dartball?
Dartball is a game that originally was played in Lutheran Churches throughout the Midwest.  It is like baseball, so those people who are familiar with baseball will recognize the basics of Dartball.

Similarities:
  • There are 9 players to a team.
  • Each team's batters take their turn trying to drive in runs by getting hits.
  • Batters can hit Singles, Doubles, Triples, 2 Base Singles, Sacrifice Flies, and Home Runs.
  • Batters can draw a walk.
  • Batters can Strike Out, Fly Out, hit a Sacrifice Fly, or hit into a Double Play.
  • Once a team has 3 outs the other team is up to bat.
  • Games consist of 9 innings.
Differences:
  • Each "batter" throws darts in an underhand fashion at a board that is 4 ft. X 4 ft., placed 20 ft. from the "batter".
  • There is no defense, like a catcher, that would be dangerous.
  • A match consists of 3 games.
  • There is no running, hitting, or exertion beyond setting up the equipment.
  • For obvious reasons, there is no stealing.

The League itself was developed to bring people into congregations through a nonthreatening, ongoing event. Currently the Oklahoma League is designated for men ages 18+.  Soon, we may expand it to a women's league or mixed league.

Why Should Your Congregation Have a Dartball Team?
Church is all about relationships.  Dartball can help build relationships as noted below:
  • Between congregation members that don't really know each other.
  • With members who have quietly slipped out of fellowship.
  • With people of the community who need to get to know the church in a less formal setting than a worship service.
  • Between people across generations, cultures and other divisions.
  • With new members.
Besides, it is loads of fun!   The end game is to bring people into relationships that lead to the ultimate relationship: A saving relationship with Jesus Christ through His Word and Sacraments.  Everything in the league should lead to this end and nothing about the league should be a roadblock to this end.

AT WORSHIP THIS WEEK:
The Psalm we will focus on  for our Wednesday Lenten Services at 12:15 and 7:15 p.m. will be
Psalm 27:1
"The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?"

We will look at Jesus' question:
"Why are you afraid?"

This coming Sunday, March 12, we will explore Psalm 121 and the shortest prayer of all,
"HELP!"
"I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come? My help comes from the Lord,
who made heaven and earth."  Psalm 121:1

A prayer to help prepare your
heart for worship this Sunday:
Father, our help comes from You!  We give thanks that You keep us and guard us.  We give thanks that You neither sleep nor slumber - but are ever vigilant in Your loving care for us.  Keep us from all evil.  Keep our going out until the final day of our "coming in," our homecoming to heaven. We ask this in Your name, for You live and reign with the Son and the Holy Spirit,
one God now and forever. Amen
