YMCA OF THE FOOTHILLS | August 2021
AUGUST NEWSLETTER
July was a busy month for our Y as we kicked off our partnership with the Glendale Unified School District to provide Enrichment Summer Camp at three elementary schools in our service area. We are currently serving 360 student campers a week and enjoying every minute of it! We also hosted a week of Resident Camp at Camp Bear in Boulder Bay, on Big Bear Lake. One hundred thirty campers, counselors, and staff enjoyed the week, making lifelong memories. Our Y also had its largest number of member visits to our facilities since March of 2020 and over 600 new members, which is a record! Thank you so much for all your continuing support through our program offerings and membership.
As we kickstart the month of August, we wanted to remind everyone we are still fighting the pandemic, doing our part to create a safe and healthy environment for all people. We will continuously monitor and abide by all health orders given by LACDPH and all guidance given from the County of Los Angeles and the cities of La Cañada Flintridge, Glendale, and Los Angeles.

Pickleball is coming to the Y thanks to the City of La Cañada Flintridge Community Program Grant. On June 28th, the city of La Cañada Flintridge awarded $20,000 of Community Group Funding to our Y . This allows us to offer pickleball onsite at the Crescenta-Cañada Family YMCA to non-YMCA participants who are current residents of the City of La Cañada Flintridge. This subsidy will help the YMCA launch, staff, and administer a community drop-in pickleball program for the physical and social benefits of La Cañada Flintridge residents.

This unique partnership between the city and the YMCA would offer both YMCA members and non-member residents of La Cañada Flintridge an opportunity to access this wildly popular sport in an enriching, indoor climate-controlled environment at CCY. This program starts on August 2nd and will be available Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 9:00 am – 1:00 pm. For more information, click below.
Program Partnership Highlight
Since 2018 the Gorvetzian Family has provided the funding for the Safety Around Water Program (SAW), which is a 5-week program that teaches its students water safety techniques that can help prevent drowning.
This program is offered at no cost to the participant and focuses on preventing drownings for children ages 5-8. This program has previously taken place at community locations like Sunland Elementary School and the Tierra del Sol Foundation. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, we will offer this program onsite this year at the Crescenta Valley Family YMCA, and it will kick off in late July. Thank you to the Gorvetzian Family for providing the funding for this life-changing program.
As we finish up summer and get ready to head back to school and work, I want you to know that our Y wishes you all the very best of health and happiness in August. I am looking forward to seeing you all at the Y.
