How long have you been a tutor at WVNCC?
I have been a tutor at WVNCC for almost 3 years.

What is your favorite subject to teach and why?
I really enjoy tutoring English, but really, it's any assignment that involves me writing/typing.
Sometimes students get discouraged and feel they can't do an assignment, which is totally not true! I do my best to encourage them, so they can gain confidence in themselves. Seeing that look of pride in their faces is the reason English is my favorite subject to tutor!

What is the best thing about being a tutor
I love to help and inspire people. I get much joy out of students’ responses to an A or B on their papers, because they didn’t think they could do it and they did, they just needed a little guidance. I'm also drawn to tutoring our students with special needs and those having accommodations because I understand where they are coming from. I have dyslexia and write my words inside out. For example, I will type;  teh instead of the adn instead of and. During a tutoring session, I type what students verbally communicate with me, and then I have to go back and correct the text. When students realize how I've overcome my dyslexia, they learn they can overcome their obstacles as well!

What advice would you give a student who might be thinking about getting a tutor?
My advice to students contemplating getting a tutor is JUST DO IT! Please don't ever feel ashamed, or embarrassed. We all have areas that we struggle in or just need reassurance in. I also like to stress the importance of not waiting until it's too late to get caught up on a subject/assignment that needs clarification, come see us as soon as you feel you are stuck, even if it seems silly. We don't judge.
