What is the Board of Review?
The Lake County Board of Review acts as an unbiased intermediary between assessors and taxpayers. The Board's hearing officers play an important role in striving for equitable and fair property assessments in Lake County through the assessment appeal process.
What are the Hearing Officer's Responsibilities?
Hearing officers hear testimony on written appeals of any real estate parcel that is claimed to be over-assessed or under-assessed. The Board reviews the assessment and either deems it to be just or corrects it as necessary.
How do I Qualify to Become a Hearing Officer?
You must have experience in real estate, and pass a qualifying exam given by the Department of Revenue.
What is the Time Commitment?
Board of Review hearings are anticipated to take place between the months of August through December. Hearings are scheduled daily from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in Waukegan. Scheduling is flexible depending on the officer's availability.
Are Hearing Officers Paid?
Yes. Hearing officers act as independent contractors and are compensated for time served.
