What matters most in your job?

About 1,000 Nebraskans responding to the 2022 Rural Poll hosted by the UNL Institute of Agricultural and Natural Resources offered a window into their employment preferences.

Although most expected inflation, interest rates, the cost of living and investment income to worsen over the next year, few showed signals of employment changes in the near future.

Current employers are performing relatively well on characteristics that matter most to respondents.

Rural Nebraskans rated the above employment characteristics according to their importance in the workplace.

Rural area employers performed relatively well in the factors most valued by employees. Responses varied somewhat by sector.

The youngest Nebraskans consider it very important that their employers value their work.

Middle-aged workers were most likely to value flexibility in their work schedule.

U.S. posts GDP gains

The U.S. economy appeared to defy the Fed’s interest rate hikes, with GDP growth in the third quarter (2.6% annual rate) that rivaled losses in the first half of the year. The market responded, but economists say the gains were fueled by export growth and domestic consumer demand shows signs of cooling.

Perfect storm in diesel

Prices have increased to $5.30/gallon and are expected to grow another 15 to 20 cents. Diesel reserves stand at their lowest since 1951, with a more acute situation in New England. Refineries can’t produce enough. Ports are struggling, which can mean more challenges getting U.S. products to market. Waivers to transport tankers between U.S. ports are reviewed on a one-on-one basis.

Pumpkins, mazes bring value

Fall pumpkin patches and corn mazes are now a $1B business for U.S. farmers. Nebraska is one of a select few states that provide liability protections for agritourism to help these traditions grow.
