Equitably Resourcing the NYC High School Application Process

New York Appleseed and Fordham Law School’s Feerick Center for Social Justice released Equitably Resourcing the NYC High School Application Process, which makes recommendations on developing tools and resources that empower students and families — particularly those who are historically marginalized, vulnerable, or under-resourced — and continuing the recent progress NYCPS has made in removing the undue burdens associated with applying to high school.

Advocacy Letter

For over a decade, New York Appleseed has advocated for addressing segregation across New York City (NYC) high schools by providing recommendations that advance transparency, fairness, and equity within the NYC high school admissions process.

It has been disheartening to hear that a proposal is being put forward to open a new screened high school, Next Generation Technology High School, in District 2.

This letter presents our reasoning for opposing this proposal in three areas: its conflicts with this administration's stated integration commitments; research on screened schools and segregation; and our view that the Educational Impact Statement is inadequate in its analysis of the effects on historically marginalized students.

PTA means Teacher Inclusion

PTAlink always receives questions about cultivating parent involvement, but this month we have had several questions about increasing teacher involvement. Parent leaders in PAs are weighing prospective amendments to their bylaws in order to formally become a PTA, thereby including teachers and possibly specific kinds of staff. Speaking to parent leaders, PTAlink has gathered a list of pros and potential challenges or concerns, as well as brainstormed a few ways to involve teachers whether or not you are formally a PTA. Whatever your organization decides, think whole school community!
