The Lame Duck Session is upon us!
Despite attempts by some of the House and Senate Republicans to stop runaway power by the Congressional Democrats, the Lame Duck session in Congress is officially in full swing. A "lame duck" session of Congress occurs whenever one Congress meets after its successor is elected, but before the successor's term begins. They are trying to pass the legislation they want before a new congress takes over. President Barack Obama met with members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus on Tuesday to express his hope and commitment of getting the DREAM Act passed during the lame-duck session as a stepping-stone toward comprehensive immigration reform. The bill would provide a path to citizenship for young illegal immigrants who complete two years of college or military service. Some think this could open the door for a form a amnesty to illegal immigrants.

Another bill being taken up in this Lame Duck Session is the Senate bill S 510: The FDA Food Safety Modernization Act.
It would grant the U.S. government new authority over the public's right to grow, trade and transport any foods. It would criminalize the transporting of organic produce if you don't comply with the rules of the federal government. The proposed legislation also puts all food production (yes, even food produced in your own garden) under the authority of the Department of Homeland Security. It also sells out U.S. sovereignty over our own food supply by ceding to the authority of both the World Trade Organization (WTO) and Codex Alimentarius.

It is also possible for the CLEAR ACT to be brought up in a Lame Duck Session.
HR 3534, the Consolidated Land, Energy and Aquatic Resources Act (CLEAR Act) of 2009,contains a provision for the federal government to spend $900 million a year to purchase private land over the next 30 years, for a grand total of $27 billion dollars over 3 decades. Rep. Gohmert (R-TX) noted that the federal government already owns or manages about 30% of the land in America, most of it in the western states. He said that the federal government has failed to maintain the federal and national parks that it already controls and is $3.7 billion behind in basic maintenance costs, according to one report. When land is federalized, it is taken off of the tax payroll. This bill has already passed the House and will now go to the Senate.

These bills and so many others are being taken up in both houses of Congress as we speak. We must educate ourselves on these critical pieces of legislation that could impact our individual rights and liberties. PLEASE call your congressman and tell them how you feel about these pieces of legislation. Included below are our local phone numbers you can call to let your voice be heard.

The Louisville Grassroots Tea Party will not be hosting a social this month. After the election, we are going to take a short hiatus and get re-focused and re-energized. Be on the look out for information on our social for next month. And as always, our newsletters will keep coming during this important session in Congress.

Louisville Tea Party in the Community U of L

The Louisville Grassroots Tea Party was proud and honored to have been invited to the University of Louisville to speak with the Young Republicans and Young Democrats in an open forum put on by the Political Science department. Our own Larry Hausman and Scott Reed were able to get information about our organization out, and were very well received by the students. We look forward to working with U of L students in the future to help spread our message of fiscal responsibility and free market solutions.
