What's Brewing?

This Earth Month, City Plants is brewing something special.

We’ve partnered with LA-based Don Francisco's Coffee to plant trees throughout Los Angeles and grow a greener, more climate resilient future for our city.

In L.A.'s Green New Deal, Mayor Eric Garcetti set ambitious goals of planting 90,000 trees by 2021 and increasing tree canopy in the areas greatest by 50% need by 2028. City Plants is actively working with partners to support these goals and grow a more equitable and climate resilient future for all Angelenos, and we know nothing is more powerful than partnership and collaboration. That's why we're asking for your support:

Plant a Tree, Take a Sip: Don Francisco's Coffee is giving away free coffee pods (fully recyclable!) for every tree City Plants distributes this month. Pick-up a tree from City Plants and partners and fuel your planting with a few cups of joe at home. Scroll down to sign up!

One Year of Free Coffee: The first 30 people to donate $150 or more to City Plants receive an entire YEAR'S supply of Don Francisco's Coffee, delivered straight to your door each month, tailored to your brewing style and preference!

Every Dollar Makes an Impact: Can’t spare $150? Donate what you can, and you’ll be automatically entered into a raffle to win a Don Francisco’s gift basket full of delicious coffee.
And stay tuned: City Plants is going live on Instagram with Don Francisco's Coffee and the Hostess-with-the-Most-est-World-Saving Drag Queen Miss Coco Peru on April 20th to talk all things trees, caffeine, and sustainability!
Growing the Future of Los Angeles Together: Dispatches From Our NEW Tree Nursery!
City Plants has launched a tree nursery with the LA Conservation Corps and Los Angeles Department of Water and Power! Commonwealth Nursery is a public private partnership to grow climate and community resilience in Los Angeles. The nursery serves as an urban ecological laboratory and training grounds to support LA’s tree canopy equity goals, creating a more livable city for all Angelenos. Commonwealth is a catalyst to grow trees from locally sourced seed, train the next generation of urban forest stewards, and grow the green jobs of the future.

Special thanks to the LA Department of Recreation and Parks, LA Parks Foundation, Grown in LA, and so many others for bringing this vision to life.

Your support this Earth Month will help
City Plants grow mighty trees from small seeds.
Digging Into Tree Canopy (In)Equity with
L.A.'s Urban Forest Equity Visiting Scholar
Dr. Vivek Shandas
With funding provided by Tree People, Accelerate Resilience LA, City Plants and the LA Urban Center for Natural Resources Sustainability have been working with Dr. Vivek Shandas and the LA Urban Forest Equity Collective to examine and address the inequitable distribution of LA’s urban forest.

A renowned expert on the intersections of public health, equity and green infrastructure, Dr. Shandas has:

  • Examined opportunities for tree canopy expansion in low-income, heat-impacted areas.
  • Made GIS-informed recommendations and assess policy shifts needed to achieve the Mayor’s Green New Deal goal of a 50% increase in tree canopy in areas of greatest need by 2028.
  • Analyzed currently available plantable space and the potential for urban canopy expansion and prioritization through a public health and equity lens.

Part II of this project will be released later this month, so stay tuned!

Meet the Team:
California Climate Action Corps Fellow Spotlight
Leo Becerra
Commonwealth Nursery Fellow with City Plants
City Plants has partnered with California Volunteers and the Office of the Governor through their new CA Climate Action Corps Program to host four fellows in 2021. These four City Plants fellows help scale local-level climate resilience projects and grow a more equitable urban forest for Los Angeles.
"When I am on-site at the Commonwealth Nursery, I make sure to always start my day by thoroughly watering the stock that we have. Then, we walk around and look for saplings that are ready to be transplanted into bigger pots. When all that is said and done we move on to maintenance and upkeep which consists of removing roots from both the actual nursery as well as the tree saplings as weeds tend to grow due to the moisture in the soil. We plan to continue our restoration efforts on the East side Terraces soon so we can prepare for the move over. We hope Earth Day turns out great!"
