What's Cooking at The Price Center (and at my house)

The Kindness Gallery:
Where Art Meets Heart

by Mike Markowitz, Dad of Sarah and member of The Price Center Board of Directors

Three and a half years ago, Sarah, Anne, and I traveled to the outskirts of Detroit for a milestone event: meeting our future in-laws. While the family introduction was a wonderful success — we love our in-laws — the trip sparked an unexpected epiphany for The Price Center.

In West Bloomfield Hills, we visited Soul Studio, an impressive art space attached to the Soul Cafe. The cafe is a bustling breakfast and lunch spot that provides vocational training and employment for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Looking at their model back then, I saw a vision of what was possible. It is incredibly rewarding to see that vision manifesting today at The Price Center with the recent launch of our own Kindness Cafe.

However, it was the Soul Studio itself—a supported gallery where adults with IDD engage in professional creative expression and vocational training—that stayed with me. I left Detroit inspired to bring that same "art as vocation" spirit to our community. Today, that inspiration has taken flight with the launch of The Kindness Gallery.

To help our artists find their professional footing, we are thrilled to welcome Judith Hurwitz as a volunteer. Judith’s connection to us is a family affair; her son, David, serves as a dedicated job developer and coach in our Chuck Flynn Employment Program. A software business consultant focused on emerging technologies, Judith has been an artist focusing on both abstract painting and ceramics for more than 20 years. She is currently the president of the Newton Art Association, an organization of about 220 artists in the local area.

.

Judith’s vision for the gallery is ambitious. She envisions future exhibitions that showcase the work of both Price Center and members of the Newton Art Association. Her organization wants to be able to contribute their love of art and collaboration to the community. She sees that a collaboration between the Newton Art Association and the Price Center can have a huge benefit to everyone in the community. Judith recognizes that expanding the gallery and providing a nurturing place for creativity is essential in the complex times we all live in.

My hope is to create a collaborative ecosystem where local Newton artists contribute their time and mentorship in exchange for access to studio space and materials provided by The Price Center. We are already looking toward our first major aspirational project: a collaborative multi-media mural created by Price Center artists.

We are just at the beginning of this creative journey, and I would love to hear your thoughts on this new chapter. What kind of art would you like to see featured in The Kindness Gallery?

What's Cooking at My House

Banana Bread

1 loaf

Prep/Cook Time: 1 hour

The road to hell is paved with good intentions. For me, those good intentions include eating healthy: fruits, vegetables, and much less sugar and fat. So as the family grocery shopper, I always make sure we have lots of fruit in the house. But somehow, those bananas always ripen before they're eaten. Solution (on the road to hell): And naturally we all like our Banana Bread made differently. Sarah likes banana bread with chocolate chips. Anne likes her's plain. And I like mine with craisins. So I usually triple the recipe and bake 3. Ugh!

Ingredients:

  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil + 1 tbsp for coating loaf pan
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/2 cup flour
  • 3 ripe bananas, mashed
  • 1 cup craisins or chocolate chips (optional)
  • 2 teaspoons Turbinado sugar (optional)

Preparation:

  • Preheat oven to 325oF.
  • Coat a nonstick loaf pan with oil and flour.
  • Combine sugar, egg, oil, baking soda, salt, flour, bananas, and craisins or chocolate chips, if using, in a mixing bowl.
  • Pour mixture into prepared loaf pan. Sprinkle top with Turbinado sugar, if using.
  • Bake for ~43 minutes and test for doneness with a toothpick.
  • Let cool. Slice. Enjoy!

Artist of The Month: Sean

In this vibrant work, Sean fills a lush teal ground with a bustling crowd of his signature figures — each one rendered with two watchful eyes, outstretched arms, and grounded legs. The energy is infectious, as dozens of personalities seem to jostle and mingle across the canvas, unified by bold sweeps of pink that add warmth and rhythm to the composition. The result is a joyful, unmistakably personal vision of community and togetherness.

Against a richly layered field of cobalt and teal, Sean's characteristic figures emerge as if stepping out of the deep blue itself, each form carrying his recognizable vocabulary of paired eyes, two arms, and two legs. The monochromatic palette gives the work a meditative, almost dreamlike quality, quite different from the lively energy of his more colorful pieces. It is a quieter statement, but no less assured.

Did You Know?

  • For residential services in MA, providers like The Price Center own the houses -- and pay the mortgage -- but the Dept. of Developmental Services own the beds and pay only when they're filled.
  • Nearly one in four adults in the U.S. lives with some form of disability, making accessibility and inclusion essential—not niche—community priorities.
  • Meaningful daytime programming and employment supports are linked to improved health, stronger social connections, and higher life satisfaction for adults with disabilities

The Price Center's
directory of families, meant to encourage communication and support our community,
is about to start Beta testing.

The directory will include the names and programs of Price Center attendees as well as names and contact details of caregivers and family. It will be shared among The Price Center community and participation is voluntary; names will only appear if families opt in (and you can opt out at any time). We anticipate the directory will help facilitate conversations about programs, supports, and activities of value to all.
