When Ellen Martin’s (Streep) idyllic vacation takes an unthinkable turn, she begins investigating a fake insurance policy and stumbles down a rabbit hole of questionable dealings. In her pursuit of the truth, she uncovers an entire hidden circulatory system flowing beneath the surface of global finance. From China to Mexico to Africa and the Caribbean, The Laundromat shares the true story of a vast network of companies that set up offshore shell organizations to avoid paying billions in taxes. Aided by bankers, lawyers, and auditors who were paid to look the other way, the network masked the identities of the individuals who benefitted from its activities. Its biggest victims, of course? Ordinary citizens like Ellen.
