A Letter From Our President & CEO | | |
Entraining our brains for a joyous holiday season…
“The holiday season is a perfect time to reflect on our blessings and seek out ways to make life better for those around us.” - Terri Marshall
“Winter, a lingering season, is a time to gather golden moments, embark upon a sentimental journey, and enjoy every idle hour.” - John Boswell
“Blessed is the season which engages the whole world in a conspiracy of love.” - Hamilton Wright Mabie

There’s something about December that encourages the world to slow its pace and take a gentle breath. Even here in Florida—where the only ice encountered is in a glass of sweet tea—this month arrives with a softer stride. It’s a season that politely reminds us to pause, look around, and rediscover the wonders hiding in plain sight.
At the Elliott Museum, we’ve always believed in the art of surprise. Not the big, boisterous kind that jumps from behind a door, but the more charming sort—like finding an old ornament in the attic, discovering it still carries the scent of a memory. Our galleries are filled with these quiet surprises. They wait patiently for the right visitor to wander by, lean in, and find themselves unexpectedly delighted.
As the days grow shorter, this museum becomes something of a winter hearth for the community. The glow isn’t from a fireplace, but from the shared warmth of people gathering to exchange stories, laughter, and the occasional debate about which model year produced the most handsome automobile. (A subject on which peace may never be brokered.) Still, the camaraderie is its own kind of light, and it burns brightly here.
December also brings lessons in stillness—gentle reminders that history’s enduring power often whispers rather than shouts. A well-worn tool, a handwritten ledger, a faded photograph… each has its own quiet insistence, urging us to listen a little closer.
So, as this year draws to its close, consider the Elliott your community living room—a place to settle in, set the world down for a moment, and let curiosity wrap around you like a familiar quilt. You are always welcome here, and the door is forever open, especially in this most reflective and charming season.
The absolute best of the season to you and yours,
| | |

| | | VIBRANT NEW MURAL BY MUSEUM ENTRANCE | | | | |
Our vibrant new mural by the museum entrance has been thoughtfully designed to lead guests into the building and mark the beginning of their museum journey.
About the Mural
This mural pays tribute to the stories, symbols, and spirit that define both the Elliott Museum and our Martin County community. Within its composition are cherished emblems of our region's cultural and natural heritage, our rare 1953-Cunningham automobile from the museum's extensive car collection, alongside Florida's native flora and fauna that remind us of the beauty we strive to preserve. Most notably, the mural features the Watchtower from our beloved House of Refuge--Martin County's oldest building, celebrating its 150th anniversary in 2026, and the sister museum to the Elliott. It stands as one of our community's most enduring and treasured landmarks.

| | TRANSLATING FLORIDA'S COLONIAL PAST | | |
This year marks a milestone in Florida’s scholarship. Researcher John H. Hann’s (1926-2009) translated journals and colonial records, now available through the University of Florida’s Spanish Colonial Records in Translation project, open a world once locked behind paleographic Spanish manuscripts. For the first time, English-speaking audiences can read the words of colonists, missionaries, and Indigenous leaders from the 16th through 18th centuries.
These translations paint a vivid picture of Florida before colonization, when Apalachee, Timucua, Calusa, and other Indigenous nations shaped the land. The journals reveal daily survival through food and trade, Indigenous agency in negotiations and resistance, and cultural encounters in petitions, reports, and letters.
By year’s end, more translations are expected, including journals tied to Apalachee missions and governors’ correspondence on English and French incursions. These works will deepen understanding of Florida’s political geography, Indigenous languages, and the fragile balance between colonial ambition and local survival.
For Martin County and the Treasure Coast, these translations are invaluable. They situate local history within broader currents of pre-colonial and colonial Florida. By making these voices accessible, we honor the resilience of communities who lived here long before modern settlement and ensure their stories remain part of our shared narrative. You can read these works here.

| | This month’s restoration work at the House of Refuge has made major progress, with windows, woodwork, and historic architectural elements being carefully rebuilt onsite and in the Tradesmen Group’s Ohio workshop.
