As we embark on another exciting chapter at the Historical Society of Martin County, let’s take a moment to celebrate the delightful surprises that await you at our beloved museums: the House of Refuge and the Elliott Museum. Our basket is overflowing with an eclectic array of experiences just waiting to be explored. From captivating art displays like the Plein Air Paint Out and the stunning Audubon Photography exhibit, to historical treasures like the fascinating Ashley Gang exhibit and memorabilia honoring local icons such as Frances Langford, and an amazing tribute to NY Yankees legend, Derek Jeter, you’ll find something to intrigue every curious soul. Fear not the specter of boredom; come peel away the layers of history, creativity, and automotive marvels!
At the Elliott Museum, immerse yourself in a world of vintage automobiles, where you can marvel at the timeless beauty of the 1954 Cunningham and the ingenious Boomerang Auto Racking System. Join us for our monthly Cars & Coffee events every second Saturday from 8:00 to 10:00 AM or take part in our Thursday Garage Tour for a behind-the-scenes look at our extraordinary collection. And if you’re in the mood for some thought-provoking discussions, we have a lively lineup of lectures and meetings with our Literary Society, along with invigorating performances from the Atlantic Classical Orchestra Chamber Series and the Stuart Community Concert Band.
We also have unique offerings beyond the exhibitions and talks: indulge in live music and delicious fare at the Philly Down South Tiki, explore mindfulness activities through sound meditations at soundvibration.net, and discover one-of-a-kind gifts in our unique gift shop.
So come on over and discover the unexpected delights waiting around every corner. I assure you, there’s something here for everyone, and we can’t wait to share our love for history and the arts with each of you.

BENEFIT FROM YOUR GENEROSITY
Want to honor a loved one or remember a special moment? Buy a Brick for $250 and support us through our Buy a Brick Program. How about adopting a 1948 Harley Davidson WL 45 for $250, or a cool 1980’s Schwinn Tiger Bike (did you have one?) for $100 or Enrico Caruso’s 1920 Hudson Touring Limo for $500? Wait, I’ve got more! How about $100 for an 1890 Quadricycle or the incredible Kurtis Kraft Midget Race Car for $500? All of these and a few more vehicles may be adopted annually through our popular Adopt a Car Program.
At The House of Refuge, you can Adopt an Artifact such as Salvaged Lamps from the 1904 Cosme Colzado Shipwreck for $250, a World War II Life Jacket for $250 or a Bear trap for $100 ... Yes, bears were prolific on Hutchinson Island during the 1800’s! And, back at the Elliott, as part of our Adopt Something Program, maybe you’d like to adopt a lighted Barber Pole for $250, a 1940 Gilbarco Gas Pump for $100 or Frances Langford’s Fishing Chair for $250.
When you Adopt, your donation helps us maintain our incredible collections, but YOU also benefit from your generosity. With all the Adopt programs, you will receive an Adoption Certificate and Signage by your adopted item. If you choose a vehicle from Adopt a Car, you will also receive a special key ring. The museums benefit and so do YOU!
All of the “treasures” I mentioned and others available, may be viewed online – each has a photo and description of the item. Begin your fun at our website: https://hsmc-fl.com/ ... Under the Support tab you will find Adopt a Car, Adopt Something, Adopt an Artifact and Buy a Brick. Click on your program choice and each will describe items, the adoption fee, and the adoption form will be available. You will also find a Buy a Brick tab that has all the information about how to order your brick or bricks. Your brick/s with your personal inscription will join the other 86 installed at the base of The Elliott flagpole and will forever be a reminder of your sentiment and generosity.
As always, we truly appreciate your thoughtful consideration and continued support,

KEN FIELDS
What did you do for a living in your career life?
I retired in 2010 and moved to Florida after owning several businesses in Long Island, NY. My favorites were a company that manufactured and installed electrical signs. My customers were national retailers. I also started a crane service and rigging company that serviced NY, NJ and Conn. The younger of my two sons owns that company today. I like big machines and admire the engineering to build them.
What are your special interests/passions?
My wife Barbara and I enjoy boating, fishing, traveling and ballroom and country dancing. Recently I have enjoyed volunteering at the Lyric Theatre and Elliott Museum.
What’s your favorite thing about volunteering at the HSMC?
I like greeting visitors and getting to know them before telling them about the exhibits.

Gasoline-powered cars were introduced in the late 1800s, but many visionaries of self-propelled vehicles go way back in history. For example, Leonardo da Vinci had sketched a horseless, mechanized cart in the early 1500s. Like many of his designs, it wasn't built in his lifetime. However, a replica is on display at the Chateau Clos Lucé, Leonardo's last home and now a museum.

Now, the magic continues with the Inaugural Coastal Colors Exhibit at The Elliott Museum, running from February 11 through May 16, 2025.
This exhibit is more than just a showcase; it’s a heartfelt way to honor the House of Refuge as we look toward celebrating its 150th Anniversary in 2026. After all these years, she still stands strong—a beacon of endurance and significance. Featuring her as the muse for these incredible pieces is a fitting tribute to her enduring legacy.
