WHAT A FUN FESTIVAL HOLIDAY EVENT
The holiday weekend on December 21 was nothing short of magical at our Fun Festive Holiday Event! The air was filled with laughter, smiles, and the joyful sounds of live music that kept everyone tapping their feet and dancing along. From the moment guests arrived, it was clear that this was going to be an unforgettable celebration.
One of the highlights of the event was the incredible live sculpting demonstration by Eduardo Gomez Rojas. Watching him bring a masterpiece to life right before our eyes was truly mesmerizing. Attendees of all ages gathered around, completely captivated by the skill and creativity on display.
But the fun didn’t stop there! Families and friends enjoyed the new UFO exhibit and activities that added to the cheerful atmosphere.
The event was a perfect blend of community, creativity, and celebration. It was heartwarming to see so many people come together to enjoy the festivities and create lasting memories.
Thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make this event such a success. Here’s to more laughter, joy, and celebration in the year ahead!

MERILIZ A. CARY
What did you do for a living in your career life?
I am an ecologist by training and by lifestyle. I continue to be fascinated by the myriads of relationships between animals, plants and the habitats they live in be it land, water or air. The research and the questions we face change every day. The basic premise remains the same. How do we strike a balance between our needs and the environment we live in?
What are your special interests/passions?
I have always loved writing stories. My stories are of people I have come to know, some lifelong friends and family, others through brief encounters. My characters come from different cultures and backgrounds. I like to explore. I especially like taking the road less travelled and learning about ancient history in situ. I do some gardening and grow orchids. I enjoy cooking what I grow and experiment with old and new recipes.
What is something that would surprise us about you?
I grew up in Istanbul and I learnt to speak four languages, Armenian, English, Turkish and French. I use languages to connect. I honestly can say I do not feel like a stranger anywhere.
What’s your favorite thing about volunteering at the HSMC?
People connections. People get involved with HSMC to learn, to broaden their point of view. I love being part of the learning process whether I am accumulating knowledge or spreading knowledge to others.

Where did the rumble seat get its name?
Answer:
According to TheHogRing.com, rumble seats began as an uncovered seat frame attached to the back of a horse carriage where servants sat. Sitting there was bumpy and jarring. They went out of style with the popularity of the automobile but re-emerged when automakers starting hiding bench seats in roadsters’ trunks, situated above noisy, “rumbling” exhaust systems.

MORE THAN JUST A HISTORICAL GEM
STEP BACK IN TIME!
Experience the charm of the House of Refuge, a treasure nestled between the waves of the Atlantic Ocean and the tranquil beauty of the Indian River Lagoon. As Florida’s oldest surviving life-saving station, this remarkable structure has stood as a beacon of safety and history since 1876, offering shelter to shipwreck survivors and now serving as a gateway to the past for visitors of all ages.
| |
But the House of Refuge is more than just a historical gem—it’s a spectacular venue for life’s most memorable moments. Imagine exchanging vows against a backdrop of stunning ocean views, hosting an intimate birthday celebration infused with coastal charm, or gathering loved ones for a reunion steeped in history. From weddings to celebrations of life and office gatherings to artistic retreats, this venue offers an unforgettable blend of rustic elegance and seaside serenity.
For those captivated by the stories of the past, you can become a part of history by participating in our Adopt an Artifact Program. This unique opportunity lets you support the preservation of historic treasures that tell the tale of seafarers and shipwrecks. Each artifact carries its own fascinating story—like the Breeches Buoy, a life-saving device used to rescue sailors from doomed ships, exemplifying the heroism of keepers who braved stormy seas.
Whether you're here to celebrate, explore, or preserve, the House of Refuge promises an experience like no other—a place where the echoes of history and the laughter of celebration blend harmoniously. Plan your visit today and make your own memories in this one-of-a-kind setting!
