Dear Friends,
As Mr. Twain might’ve said had he spent a summer in Martin County, “Heaven ain’t too far off if you’re lucky enough to find yourself on Hutchinson Island.” And lucky we are indeed.
Here at the Historical Society of Martin County, we count our blessings twice every morning—once for the sparkling Atlantic that kisses our shores, and again for our two glorious campuses: the Elliott Museum and the House of Refuge Museum. Perched amid the ocean’s breeze and the lull of palm fronds, these historic havens offer a respite from the hurry and worry of mainland life.
The Elliott Museum, with its 50,000 square feet of cool, air-conditioned charm, is the perfect antidote to our sub-tropical sun. Whether you come for the vintage wheels, the stunning art, or the endless exhibitions and entertainment, there’s no shortage of wonder inside—or outside. We're not shy about using every inch of our indoor and outdoor spaces for events, music, and good conversation.
Just a seashell’s throw away, you’ll find the House of Refuge Museum, a noble landmark that has weathered both storms and centuries. Please note, she’ll be taking a well-deserved rest starting June 1st for much-needed renovations. We promise she'll return even more captivating than before.
And speaking of captivating—nestled in the shadow of the Elliott Museum is the Philly Down South Tiki (phillydownsouth.net), a tropical treat where the music’s always live, the staff always smiling, and the breeze always just right.
For those seeking something sublime, the second floor of the Elliott hosts Sound Vibration's legendary sound healing sessions (soundvibration.net). Come feel the world melt away in a symphony of serenity.
Let’s not forget our neighbors at the Florida Oceanographic Coastal Center—just across the street and teeming with marine marvels for the whole family.
So, this summer, skip the traffic, sidestep the stress, and join us on Hutchinson Island—where history is alive, art is vibrant, and charm is always in season.
Yours in curiosity and coastal comfort,

BARBARA COLEMAN
What did you do for a living in your career life?
My career was in the field of Interior Design which I studied at Fairfield University. I worked for a great design firm in CT and spent a lot of time in New York Showrooms for my client base-commercial and residential-it was my dream job.
What are your special interests/passions?
I enjoy travel, cuisine, style on all levels-and meeting people which is always a learning experience.
What is someting that would surprise us about you?
I was a live-a-board on a catamaran in the Abacos for a year. It enabled me to get to know the Abaconian culture and meet boaters from all over. I also volunteered at a 1 room school house in Man-O-War Cay and helped out at the Marsh Harbor Christmas Party with the Mayor and all the kids. The Abaconian people are gentle and very sweet.
What’s your favorite thing about volunteering at the HSMC?
A. The eager smiles people have as they enter the Elliott Museum B. The level of curiosity people have as they view and learn in the galleries.

| | OVER $1.7 MILLION GRANTED TO RESTORE THE BELOVED HOUSE OF REFUGE! | |
We’re excited to share some truly historic news with you!
The House of Refuge at Gilbert’s Bar — Florida’s last remaining House of Refuge — has been awarded over $1.7 million for a comprehensive restoration project, thanks to the Martin County Board of Commissioners and our amazing partners at Martin County.
Starting June 1, the House of Refuge will temporarily close to the public so that this essential preservation work can be done safely and thoroughly. We expect the project to take about 6 to 8 months, with our goal to reopen just in time for a 150th Anniversary Celebration in 2026!
Follow us on Facebook as we post the progress of our beloved House of Refuge.
