Week 1 - Fall Semester 2023/24
|
Principal's message:
Welcome back Coyotes to the 2023/24 school year! We have kicked off the school year with a bang, and are closing out the week on a high note. Our students were welcomed back by our Link Crew leaders, with ASB organizing and executing a wonderful first day assembly. Special thank you to all our groups who participated in the first week festivities to make it a fun start to the year, and to our marketing partners B43 for putting together a little video of our first day back.

Next, I'd like to recognize our student body as a whole for their ability to embrace a much needed change to our day-to-day operations at The Park. Like I shared with all of you prior to returning, we began our In-Class/On-Time Campaign this week, revamping our systems around attendance and tardies to provide more structure for our students, with an end goal of greatly increasing their achievement levels in the classroom. Well...our first bit of data is in, and BPHS has hit a homerun in its first at bat. After holding Coyote 101 on Wednesday, going over the WHY behind our new initiative, and discussing all the other aspects of being a BPHS Coyote student, we implemented all aspects of our campaign. In the first two days we've already reduced our daily average of tardies by over 50%! But more importantly, we have seen the beginnings of a culture shift that brings a more studious, mature, and collegial atmosphere to The Park. I will continue to share the results of our campaign as we move throughout the year, but I wanted to recognize the good work of our staff, students, and community as We RISE Together.
|
I also want to recognize our students and staff who participated in the weeklong Spirit Day Dress Up activities. Check out our spirited staff who checked in for a team pic at lunch today. So besides BP Gear Friday, which of course I love, Thursday's Band Shirt Reveal was a big hit. Check out Ms. Scott, Mr. Cuevas, and myself showing our support to our various rocker groups.
Trivia question of the week
This is a new component of the newsletter where each week a trivia question will be buried somewhere in the newsletter. The first student to email me the correct answer(s) will win some type of BP Merch. This week, the winner gets an ASB Card! Woohoo!
Question (It's a two part question): What is the band Dr. Berg is representing on his shirt, and who is the drummer for that band? (email your response to sberg@fjuhsd.org)

I'd like to thank our ASB for their tireless work in preparing and launching our first day assembly and a fun first week back at The Park. It's going to be a great year Coyotes. Get involved, be engaged, and make this year a year to remember.
Student Spotlight of the Week
Joshua Labrador and Suzzie Oyama - ASB Executive president and Vice-President - Have done an amazing job as student leaders, not only getting ready for the start of the school year, but throughout last year, pushing the envelope of school spirit and innovating ideas to bring more engagement to the student body of BPHS. Great job!

Lastly, I'd like to let everyone know that we are monitoring the impending storm that is working its way up the coast and its possible impact on us come Monday morning. As of right now we are planning to have school as normal, but please give yourself some extra time getting to school in the morning as there is projected to be high winds and rain Sunday into Monday. Should something change, I will send a message via aeries communication Sunday evening.
Have a great weekend and stay safe Coyotes!
Dr. Berg

"Support is just around the corner"
| |
Buena Park High School values all student’s social-emotional health, and we have developed a center that houses resources to support students throughout the day. Students who need a safe place to cope with anxiety, stress or need someone to talk to can visit our COYOTE CORNER (Room 27) at the front of the school. The Corner is open before and after school, during lunch and breaks, by appointment with a therapist, or with a pass from a teacher or administrator. Please stop in and visit and know that "Support is just around the CORNER."

Hello, Coyotes!
We survived the first week of SCHOOL!
I am so excited about our year together. Each week, at the beginning/ and or the week, I will be sharing something that encourages, reminds, or supports your holistic wellness. Part of my role is to continue to foster and prioritize wellness for ALL OF US! These emails will have quotes, links, activities, and/or resources that support your personal and professional wellness (each week may vary).
This month we will focus on starting a new year! My desire is to remind all of us that we get to choose, today, how our year will go. We can't control people, places, and things and we cannot predict what tomorrow brings. However, we can choose, today, the mindset we will have when facing all of that.

Students...do you know your SLOs
Student Learning Outcomes |
The purpose of SLOs are to increased student awareness of their own learning
Explicitly-stated learning goals give students a way to think and talk about what they have learned. They make it easier for students to “know what they know” and give students a language to communicate what they know to others. Such awareness is considered central to learning that lasts.

Have a Great Week Coyotes!
It's a Great Time to be a Coyote! | We boast an amazingly diverse student body that enriches the campus on a daily basis. Our focus on success means we hold all students to high expectations, and provide a supportive environment in order to help them reach their dreams. The work will be hard, but we provide the means for all students to be connected to high school and gain future college and career ready success.
