Week 2 - Fall Semester 2023/24
Principal's message:
Two weeks into the school year, and things are humming along. It feels like these first two weeks have gone by very fast. I would like to start this week by recognizing all our students who have embraced the In-Class/On-Time Campaign that was implemented this year. Not only have we seen a drastic decline in our tardies, but students are also in class more, and attending school at a higher rate. To give you some concrete data from this past week, we are now averaging over a 50% decrease in tardies compared to last year, and have had 18 passing periods over this past week with less than 10 tardies across the whole school. Even coming back from lunch is getting better and better each day. Great job Coyotes for embracing responsibility! The only period that remains an issue is 1st period. And while it's still significantly lower than in years past, it is still not to our new standards. So parents, this is where we need your help. Please work with your student(s) to ensure they're here prior to 8:25 (9:25 on late start days). The most tardies we had all week was 1st period on Wednesday, a late start day. So let's work together to remedy that for next week! Keep up the good work Coyotes!

Today was Club Rush 2023...and it was big success! There were dozens and dozens of clubs represented, and the sign up pages were numerous. It's great to see the involvement of our students and the increased engagement from our newbies. With lots of new clubs, it's nice seeing all of our organizations provide ways for students to explore their passions.
BPHS has also continued its push toward staff and student safety. Our committee held their first meeting of the year this week to go over processes and safety needs for the year. We also held our first evacuation drill of the year. The drill was very smooth and showcased a great response from our staff and students. Great job to Mr. K and our staff for their professional response and execution.
Student(s) Spotlight of the Week
Congratulations to the following Coyotes who have received Academic Honors from the College Board National Recognition Programs!

Welcome to The Pack!
We'd like to welcome new staff members: Itzel Ortiz Garcia and Rob Summers to the the Coyote Pack. Itzel is also our new Cheer coach, and Rob is our new Asst. Varsity Boys Basketball Coach.
| |
Lastly, I hope to see many of you this coming Wednesday as we kick off our Parent Ambassador Team. If you're passionate about spreading the good news about BPHS in the community I would hope to see you there! I'd especially like parents who represent the wonderful cross section of students from our community (athletics, arts, academics, cte, various cultures and backgrounds, in-district, out-of-district, etc.) We're going to get the word out that BP is a Destination HS for ALL students.
It's looking like this weekend will be a typical August weekend (unlike the last one). Have a great weekend Coyotes!

Trivia question of the week
This week's spirit week was "Barbie and Ken Day." Barbie took the US by storm and transformed the toy business with its launch in 1959. But 1959 was also an important year for two states in our union. What significant event happened in 1959 to the United States (hint: it has to do with the number 49 and 50)
This week, the winner gets a BP shirt of their choosing! (email your response to sberg@fjuhsd.org)

Coyote Corner
"Support is just around the corner"
| |
Buena Park High School values all student’s social-emotional health, and we have developed a center that houses resources to support students throughout the day. Students who need a safe place to cope with anxiety, stress or need someone to talk to can visit our COYOTE CORNER (Room 27) at the front of the school. The Corner is open before and after school, during lunch and breaks, by appointment with a therapist, or with a pass from a teacher or administrator. Please stop in and visit and know that "Support is just around the CORNER."

Hello, Coyotes!
We survived the first week of SCHOOL!
I am so excited about our year together. Each week, at the beginning/ and or the week, I will be sharing something that encourages, reminds, or supports your holistic wellness. Part of my role is to continue to foster and prioritize wellness for ALL OF US! These emails will have quotes, links, activities, and/or resources that support your personal and professional wellness (each week may vary).
This month we will focus on starting a new year! My desire is to remind all of us that we get to choose, today, how our year will go. We can't control people, places, and things and we cannot predict what tomorrow brings. However, we can choose, today, the mindset we will have when facing all of that.

Students...do you know your SLOs
Student Learning Outcomes |
The purpose of SLOs are to increased student awareness of their own learning
Explicitly-stated learning goals give students a way to think and talk about what they have learned. They make it easier for students to “know what they know” and give students a language to communicate what they know to others. Such awareness is considered central to learning that lasts.

Have a Great Week Coyotes!
It's a Great Time to be a Coyote! | We boast an amazingly diverse student body that enriches the campus on a daily basis. Our focus on success means we hold all students to high expectations, and provide a supportive environment in order to help them reach their dreams. The work will be hard, but we provide the means for all students to be connected to high school and gain future college and career ready success.
