Week 3 - Fall Semester 2022/22

Principal's message:

We have moved into the month of September, and the heat has definitely come with it! But we have managed to stay cool here at The Park. It's been another successful week for our students and they continue to RISE Up this year. Our sports teams all picked up victories this week, with cross country, water polo, tennis, volleyball, and football each picking up wins!

Thanks to all students for your continued efforts in being in-class/on-time, and working with your teachers to engage more with your peers and the curriculum. As we move into this Labor Day, I'd like to thank my BPHS staff for their tireless efforts day in and day out to push the envelope of excellence here at BPHS.  Continue to work hard with our students as we encourage them to meet our high expectations.

Parents/guardians: one area we will be focusing on improving, and want to partner with you on, is our dress code. Remember students, the do's and dont's from Coyote 101. We're seeing some attire that is not appropriate for school, and I want you to try and correct it on your own, before we start getting more and more parents involved. I know it's hot, but the biggest issue we're seeing is the crop-tops and midriffs. Most other dress code issues are non-existent. So great job to those students who have understood the difference between school and outside of school attire.

I hope you all have a great long Labor Day weekend. I’ve seen a lot of hard work these first three weeks of school, and this weekend will be a nice respite.  Although we all are excited about the long weekend, seldom do we reflect on exactly why we get the day off.

This monday we observe Labor Day in the United States which is a public federal holiday celebrated on the first Monday in September. It honors the American labor movement and the contributions that workers have made to the strength, prosperity, laws, and well-being of our country. It is the Monday of the long weekend known as Labor Day Weekend and it is considered the unofficial end of summer in the United States (although with it being the hottest days of the year it might not feel like it)!

So take some time to relax and try to find a large body of water to cool-off in because it’s going to be HOT.  See you all back Tuesday!

Quote of the Week
Attention Parents/Guardians

Athletics
Girls Volleyball

Coyote Volleyball did it again! It's the third time this season they've take a team to five games and come away victorious. Their record is now 5-2, with a game tonight against Western HS. Our girls amazing defensive skills are keeping us in games and helping to put us over the top in many of these contests. Keep it up Girls!

Football

Varsity FB is off to a great start, secured their second win in as many games, beating Savannah HS 38-14. They are 2-0 for the first time in 4 seasons. The Coyotes were led by Junior RB Danny Washington who had two touchdowns, Seniors Donovan Hall and Jadin Saxton who each had a special teams return for a touchdown, and Junior QB Aaron Rodriguez who added 130 yards passing and another touchdown (to Saxton). Way to go Coyotes!

This week they are on the road to play El Dorado at 7pm at Valencia High School stadium. Please come out and support.

Boys Waterpolo

Boys water polo added another win to their total this week by beating Whittier HS 21-6.  The boys are undefeated so far this year and have a much deserved break this weekend before they host a tournament next week.

Girls Tennis

Congratulations to our Lady Coyotes Tennis team on their win this week vs La Mirada. They are now 1-1 on the season. Yesterday, the girl's tennis team had a great match against La Mirada. They were led by Saloni Kainth and Hailee Uy who each had two singles wins. Doubles team Ana and Guadalupe took two wins away as well, with Doubles team Nina and Stephanie also getting a win. Great job ladies! Be sure to come out to the courts today and Thursday at 3 pm to see your JV play!

Cross Country

Cross Country got off to a great start this season at the Bronco Roundup Invitational.

In the boys race, David Juarez won the entire thing! He took first place in Division 2 with a time of 10:28, 10 seconds faster than the 2nd place runner.

Nathaniel Guerrero also medaled, placing 24th, with a time of 11:41 (top 35 earn a medal)

In the girls race, our Coyotes placed second as a team in the Division 2 varsity race. Six of them medaled: Yessenia Chavez, Hana Martin, Yadira Rosario, Evelyn Salgado, Stephanie Pineda, and Jacqueline Totolhua.

Great job to both programs! The runners are excited and ready to compete in their first league match at Clark Park next week.

Girls Golf

Girls golf had an interest meeting last week and are looking to get started next week! If you are interested in golfing this season, please email Ms. Salcido - asalcido@fjuhsd.org

Seniors planning to apply to private colleges or out of state schools, please check the requirements to apply to the colleges you are interested in to find out if the SAT or ACT is required. Cal State Universities and University of California colleges do not use SAT or ACT scores in the admissions process but other schools may consider or require scores. Now is the time to register for those tests if you need scores. Registration is done online.

     ACT: https://act.org

PSAT is coming October 12th for 10th and 11th grade students. PSAT scores are used for some scholarship programs and will give you a good idea of your SAT scores. All 10th and 11th graders planning to go to 4 year colleges are encouraged to take the PSAT.

Coyote Corner
"Support is just around the corner"
Buena Park High School values all student’s social-emotional health, and we have developed a center that houses resources to support students throughout the day. Students who need a safe place to cope with anxiety, stress or need someone to talk to can visit our COYOTE CORNER (Room 27) at the front of the school. The Corner is open before and after school, during lunch and breaks, by appointment with a therapist, or with a pass from a teacher or administrator. Please stop in and visit and know that "Support is just around the CORNER."

Students...do you know your SLOs
Student Learning Outcomes
The purpose of SLOs are to increased student awareness of their own learning

Explicitly-stated learning goals give students a way to think and talk about what they have learned. They make it easier for students to “know what they know” and give students a language to communicate what they know to others. Such awareness is considered central to learning that lasts.
Have a Great Week Coyotes!
It's a Great Time to be a Coyote!
