Monday, August 10 at 2:00 p.m. Dinosaurs: How Do We Know? With Jurassic Classroom! How do we know about animals like T. rex and Brontosaurus if no one has ever seen them? Were dinosaurs really like they are in the movies? Participants will tackle questions like these by looking at actual dinosaur fossils and utilizing the same skills as real paleontologists to separate fact from fiction when it comes to these extraordinary animals. Join us in the Junior Room for this fascinating program on dinosaurs and their survival adaptations with Jurassic Classroom. Wednesday, August 12 at 6:30 p.m. Art Film Showing: Painting the Modern Garden Monet to Matisse. From the exhibition walls to the wonder and beauty of artists’ gardens like Giverny and Seebüll, the film takes a magical and widely travelled journey to discover how different contemporaries of Monet built and cultivated modern gardens to explore expressive motifs, abstract colour, decorative design and utopian ideas. Guided by passionate curators, artists and garden enthusiasts, this remarkable collection of Impressionists, Post-Impressionists, and avant-garde artists of the early twentieth century will reveal the rise of the modern garden in popular culture and the public’s enduring fascination with gardens today. Long considered spaces for expressing colour, light and atmosphere, the garden has occupied the creative minds of some of the worlds greatest artists. As Monet said “Apart from painting and gardening, I’m no good at anything.” For lovers of art or lovers of gardens, this is an ideal film. Co-presented by the Kent Art Association. Friday, August 21 at 6:30 p.m. History of Dinosaurs with Jurassic Classroom. This program looks specifically at the story of dinosaur evolution in the greater context of the History of Life on Earth. Participants will look at real dinosaur fossils and museum-quality casts to follow the evolution of dinosaurs throughout the Mesozoic Era, culminating in the evolution of modern birds. The patterns in dinosaur evolution will be compared to the adaptations employed by living animals to determine if there are patterns in evolution. Finally, these same observations will be applied to make predictions about what some dinosaurs might look like today had they not gone extinct! Join us in the Reading Room for this fascinating program on dinosaurs and their survival adaptations with Jurassic Classroom. This program is intended for teens and adults, but is open to all ages.
