The DeKalb County Youth Commission is a leadership program that provides youth from varied socioeconomic backgrounds and multicultural neighborhoods with opportunities to have a voice in their communities.


The Youth Commissioners will become effective leaders of the future by learning the roles of county government, participating in civic and community activities, and representing the views of DeKalb County youth.


Students enrolled in DeKalb County’s high schools from the tenth through twelve grades are encouraged to apply annually to participate in the DeKalb County Youth Commission program.

Volunteers 50 Years and Older Needed for Virtual Tutoring Program for DeKalb Students

Last year, AARP Experience Corp volunteers helped 77% of students advance to the next reading grade level. Come be a part of the next group of volunteers to do the same.


The DeKalb County Human Services Department is recruiting volunteers who are 50 years old and older to participate in the AARP Experience Corps, an evidence-based literacy program that improves the reading skills of children in kindergarten through the 3rd grade for the past 2 years.

New Partnership Helps DeKalb Youth Improve Control of Their Asthma

The DeKalb County Human Services, Office of Youth Services, Project One80 Program partners with Georgia Asthma Control Program (GACP), a program funded by the Center for Disease Control, to provide free asthma interventions to youth ages 8-17. Using an evidence based curriculum developed by The American Lung Association, Open Airway for Schools (ages 8-11) and Kickin’ Asthma (ages 12-17), this partnership provides health educator facilitated sessions to Project One80 youth across DeKalb County.

The Office of Youth Services Launched the Kensington Soccer Station in Partnership with Soccer In The Streets

DeKalb County Human Services, Office of Youth Services, partnered with Soccer in The Streets to launch the Kensington Soccer Station at MARTA's Kensington Station. Soccer in the Streets empowers youth through soccer, character development, mentoring, and employability programs. The organization has partnered with MARTA to create easily accessible soccer opportunities for DeKalb County residents. The event, which took place on July 16th, 2022, included DeKalb County CEO Michael Thurmond, District 4 Commissioner Steve Bradshaw, Super District 6 Commissioner Ted Terry, and other DeKalb County stakeholders. OYS and Soccer In The Streets will continue the partnership to offer soccer programs to the youth of DeKalb County.

Central DeKalb Senior Center Partners with Mason Mill Park for Nature Walks

Through a partnership with Jonah McDonald, Park Naturalist at Mason Mill Park, CDSC members have had the opportunity to take early morning Bird Strolls and monthly Full Moon Walks. This new activity is a welcome addition to the center’s outdoor adventures, which include an early morning boot camp.

Let's Move DeKalb, Hosted by District 3 Commissioner Larry Johnson

District 3 Commissioner Larry Johnson, Amazon, & Victory For The World Church will host the 12th Annual Let's Move! DeKalb Back to School Mobile Food Pantry on Saturday, July 30th, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. OR until we run out at the Intergenerational Center at Exchange Park located at 2771 Columbia Drive in Decatur.


We will provide students with a bookbag, drawstring bag, or tote bag with school supplies. Each registered family will receive a food basket filled with fresh produce and groceries.


Please note the following:

  • This event is first-come, first-served.
  • Line up starts at 10:00 a.m. If you arrive earlier you may be asked to leave and return.
  • Children must be present in order to receive school supplies.
  • Limited to 3 kids per vehicle.
  • Registering in advance does not secure your school supplies or bag.
