Volunteers Aged 50+ Needed for Tutoring Program for DeKalb Students

The DeKalb County Human Services Department is recruiting volunteers to participate in The AARP Experience Corps, a tutoring program designed to help DeKalb students improve their reading skills. Volunteer tutors are needed now to begin tutoring September 2023

 

The AARP Experience Corps is an evidence-based literacy program that improves the reading skills of children in kindergarten through the 3rd grade. The Human Services Department is working in collaboration with the United Way of Greater Atlanta, the AARP Foundation, and the DeKalb County School District on this initiative.

DeKalb County Youth Commission Now Accepting Applications

The DeKalb County Youth Commission is a leadership program that provides youth from varied socioeconomic backgrounds and multicultural neighborhoods with opportunities to have a voice in their communities.

 

The Youth Commissioners will become effective leaders of the future by learning the roles of county government, participating in civic and community activities, and representing the views of DeKalb County youth.

 

Students enrolled in DeKalb County’s high schools from the tenth through twelve grades are encouraged to apply annually to participate in the DeKalb County Youth Commission program.

East DeKalb at Bruce Street Senior Center Manager Receives Lifetime Achievement Award

Hazel Gonzalez, East DeKalb at Bruce Street center manager, received a Lifetime Achievement Award at this year's ADRC Healthy Communities Summit. The event, targeted to senior center managers, Area Agency on Aging staff, dietitians, nurses, care coordinators, nutrition service providers, and others, is designed to provide workshops and general sessions on a variety of topics that focus on healthy living and healthy aging. It seeks to improve integration and seamlessness of services to older adults, persons with disabilities, families and caregivers statewide.

North DeKalb Senior Center Members Head Out to Lunch Time Jazz at Atlantic Station

The center's jazz lovers spent an afternoon at Atlantic Station for Lunch Time Jazz, featuring Jazz artist Karen Bryant. The weekly event offers smooth tunes, good vibes, and a chance to eat at the many surrounding restaurants.

Creativity Abounds at DeKalb Atlanta Senior Center

DeKalb Atlanta Senior Center held a Creative Design Baskets contest. Seniors were awarded with 1st, 2nd and 3rd place ribbons! 


The center also held a Mother's Day Tea celebration during Older Americans Month.

Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony for the Newly Constructed East Central DeKalb Community and Senior Center

Commissioner Steve Bradshaw was joined by DeKalb CEO Michael Thurmond and members of the DeKalb County Board of Commissioners for the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the East Central DeKalb Community and Senior Center at 4885 Elam Road, Stone Mountain, 30083 on Thursday, July 20th.

 

In 2016 DeKalb Community Development Director Allen Mitchell conducted a feasibility study in South DeKalb to identify gaps in senior services. This study led to the construction of East Central DeKalb Community and Senior Center as well as East DeKalb Senior Center at Bruce Street and Toby Grant Intergenerational Center in 2022.

 

The energy-efficient and sustainable 24,000-square-foot community

and senior center, which will be led by DeKalb County Recreation, Parks & Cultural Affairs and operated by DeKalb Human Services, is a modern and functional facility that meets the needs of constituents in Districts 4 and 7. The center features approximately 131 parking spaces, a covered drop-off area with a main entrance, service entrance, landscaping, and pedestrian plaza. This facility also contains a 75-foot by 30-foot indoor heated saltwater lap pool and a large exterior patio with

furniture.

This will allow Soaring High Eagles Ministries to empower men and women seeking to heal from their negative past life experiences, so they can live the life they choose to live.

I CARE Offers Driver Services for Seniors

Are you a senior citizen in need of transportation? Do you worry about getting to your medical appointments or the grocery store? Then consider joining I CARE, Inc. as a CLIENT.

 

I CARE, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that provides FREE transportation to seniors in DeKalb County for medical appointments and food shopping. I CARE matches volunteer drivers with older adults who, for financial and/or health reasons, have no other means to get to doctors, dentists, clinics and grocery stores.

 

Rides are provided weekdays, between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.


***VOLUNTEER DRIVERS NEEDED***

Volunteer drivers use their own vehicles to provide clients of I CARE with free and safe transportation. As a volunteer, you’re providing a critical service, as well as companionship, for DeKalb County’s seniors.

Fresh on DeK, DeKalb County’s Mobile Farmers Market Continues

DeKalb County Extension announces the ninth season of Fresh on DeK, DeKalb County’s Mobile Farmers Market, which travels throughout the county offering nutrition education, live onsite food demonstrations and fresh fruits and vegetables for sale.


Session B will be held from July 17 – September 8.   


Fresh on DeK brings fresh fruits and vegetables to DeKalb County.   

Fresh on DeK's purpose is to improve the health of the community, the viability of local produce and to preserve the environment for future generations by providing access to fresh produce and nutritional education programming throughout DeKalb County.
