District 4 Youth Can Receive Mentoring and Coaching with the Possibility to Earn College Credit at Morehouse College

Morehouse College Culturally Relevant Computing Lab serves as the host organization and community partner for the 2022 DeKalb County Office of Youth Services, Human Service Department R.I.S.E. UP Program. The theme for the program is entitled, “Computational Manhood”. DeKalb County males from 6th to 12th grades will benefit from mentoring, coaching, and instruction from Dr. Kinnis Gosha and a cohort of 8-10 mentors who are STEAM majors at Morehouse College. 

 

Program sessions will be held every Monday from 10:30 a.m. - noon beginning June 13th, 2022 for the duration of 6 weeks.

 

High school students that complete the curriculum satisfactorily and make a score of 50 on the final exam will receive three hours of college credit from Morehouse College.

The Older Americans Month celebration continues with a North DeKalb block party. Register below to join us for food, fun, games, and more!


Every May, DeKalb County observes Older American’s Month, a national initiative of the federal Administration on Community Living. This year, we will be focused on aging in place – how older adults can plan to stay in their homes and live independently in their communities for as long as possible. The 2022 theme is Age My Way, an opportunity for all of us to explore the many ways older adults can remain in and be involved with their communities.


Events are free to the public, however registration is required. For the best results we recommend opening registration links in a Chrome browser.

DeKalb Human Services Department Announces the Beginning of its 2022-2023 Human Services Grant Cycle

The purpose of the Human Services Grant Program is to provide opportunities for community partnership with local organizations that can successfully address identified service needs for the citizens of DeKalb County, Georgia.


Eligible non-profit organizations are encouraged to apply for the opportunity to be awarded a grant utilizing County General Fund and Victim Assistance Funds. Agencies that receive Victim Assistance Grant Funds, must meet the County’s eligibility criteria, and must also be certified to provide victim assistance programming through the State of Georgia Criminal Justice Coordinating Council.

 

The Human Services Grant Program is competitive, and the total amount of awards allotted each year is based on the availability of funds. This grant program is designed to supplement existing programs and activities for DeKalb County residents.


Examples of appropriate service areas for the Human Services Grant Program include, but are not limited to, youth development/early childhood programs, senior services, services for individuals with disabilities & special needs, domestic violence & family intervention, substance abuse treatment & prevention, mental & behavioral health, health & wellness, nutrition & hunger prevention, legal counseling & advocacy, family economics & money management, refugee services, homelessness and family transition.

“The Sky is the Limit” was the theme of DeKalb County CEO Michael Thurmond’s State of the County address on April 27 in the Atlantic Aviation corporate hangar at DeKalb-Peachtree Airport.


CEO Thurmond’s outlook for 2022 and beyond will focus on DeKalb County’s ongoing efforts to respond to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic while investing in critical infrastructure that supports economic growth and prosperity.

Volunteer Appreciation Week: Celebrating Those Who Helped 77% of Students Advance to the Next Reading Grade Level

Last week the Office of Partnerships and External Affairs celebrated the volunteers who helped DeKalb students improve their reading skills through a partnership with the United Way of Greater Atlanta, the AARP Foundation and the DeKalb County School District for the AARP Experience Corps Tutoring Program


OPEA staff provided a daily virtual note of appreciation to acknowledge their time and dedication to assisting in the growth of our students. The week concluded with a special token of gratitude– gift baskets from Georgia Gifts & More, a local DeKalb business, and a special greeting from DeKalb Super District 7 Commissioner Lorrain Cochran-Johnson, who highlighted the significant achievement of last year’s program.

POLL WORKERS NEEDED

 

Poll workers are key to the election process!

 

Poll Officials, once selected, are required to attend training on policy, procedures and election equipment. Poll Officials must work together the day before the Election to setup the polling precinct and prepare for Election Day. On Election Day, every Poll Official must arrive at their assigned polling location at 5:30am and will work until the close of the Election to ensure every citizen of DeKalb County have an opportunity to vote.
