In Memoriam
August Wilson
April 27, 1945 - October 2, 2005
Certainly, among the most prolific and profound playwrights to ever inhibit this earth, today we celebrate the life and legacy of Playwright August Wilson. Born Frederick August Kittel in Pittsburgh, PA, Wilson at the age of 15 years old pursued an “independent education” at Pittsburgh’s Carnegie Library where he earned his high school diploma. He assumed the pen name, August Wilson to honor his mother following his father’s 1955 passing.
The two time Pulitzer Prize winner for his plays, “Fences” and “The Piano Lesson,” will forever be heralded for his Pittsburgh cycle of plays that defined with lush colorful textures Black life in the Hill District of Pittsburgh covering each decade of the twentieth century.
