Celebrate National Senior Center Month With Us

Each September we celebrate senior centers by showcasing how they promote a positive image of aging. This year, we demonstrate their importance in the community by delivering vital resources to help seniors holistically age well and empowering them to make mind, body, spirit, and community connections. And so, this year's chosen theme, "Strengthening Community Connections" is a reflection on all that we have accomplished.

Please join us in this month's celebration by attending the events listed above. Please note that some events are for members only.

276 Seniors Participate in the Georgia Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program

For over 15 years DeKalb County Human Services has hosted the Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program, a program that provides eligible senior participants with market checks to purchase fresh, nutritious, unprepared, locally-grown fruits, vegetables and herbs at DeKalb's four congregate senior centers. Seniors who participate receive nutrition education, health information on the benefits of fresh fruits and vegetables, suggestions for selecting, preparing and storing fresh fruits and vegetables, money saving tips, and quick recipes.

To be eligible, seniors must be a Georgia resident, 60 years old or older at the time of the market, and have a household income at or below 185% of the federal poverty guidelines. Recipients may participate once per year during a market season and receive market checks valued at $30.00 to purchase fresh produce from authorized program farmers. This year, Human Services provided services to 276 seniors through the Farmers Market Nutrition Program.
