FROM PASTOR ANN

Bible Study

Genesis 45:3-11, 15

Joseph said to his brothers, “I am Joseph. Is my father still alive?” But his brothers could not answer him, so dismayed were they at his presence.

Then Joseph said to his brothers, “Come closer to me.” And they came closer. He said, “I am your brother, Joseph, whom you sold into Egypt. And now do not be distressed or angry with yourselves because you sold me here, for God sent me before you to preserve life. For the famine has been in the land these two years, and there are five more years in which there will be neither plowing nor harvest. God sent me before you to preserve for you a remnant on earth and to keep alive for you many survivors. So it was not you who sent me here but God; he has made me a father to Pharaoh and lord of all his house and ruler over all the land of Egypt. Hurry and go up to my father and say to him, ‘Thus says your son Joseph, God has made me lord of all Egypt; come down to me; do not delay. 10 You shall settle in the land of Goshen, and you shall be near me, you and your children and your children’s children, as well as your flocks, your herds, and all that you have. 11 I will provide for you there, since there are five more years of famine to come, so that you and your household and all that you have will not come to poverty.’

+Have you ever treated someone close to you poorly? Has someone close to you treated you poorly? Was the situation ever resolved with forgiveness and/or reconciliation? How did it come about? How long was the process? What does the relationship look like now?

Luke 6:27-38

27 “But I say to you who are listening: Love your enemies; do good to those who hate you; 28 bless those who curse you; pray for those who mistreat you. 29 If anyone strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also, and from anyone who takes away your coat do not withhold even your shirt. 30 Give to everyone who asks of you, and if anyone takes away what is yours, do not ask for it back again. 31 Do to others as you would have them do to you.

32 “If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. 33 If you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. 34 If you lend to those from whom you expect to receive payment, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, to receive as much again. 35 Instead, love your enemies, do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return. Your reward will be great, and you will be children of the Most High, for he himself is kind to the ungrateful and the wicked. 36 Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.

37 “Do not judge, and you will not be judged; do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven; 38 give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap, for the measure you give will be the measure you get back.”

+Who is your enemy? Is it a person or people, or concepts & ideologies? How do you figure out what loving your neighbor means using the lens of Jesus?

+We proclaim to be a welcoming church. How do we do that when we don't always agree with each other on various issues?

+How do you think we judge others in comparison to how God may judge?

EVENTS & INFOS

Hymnal Madness: A competitive format that pairs hymns in a tournament-style structure. It's a fun way to engage in music!

We are going to have a tournament as a fundraiser this year! You'll get to decide where the funds go, too. Here is how it will work:

  1. You choose your favorites to go on the "board." The top 32 songs will be added.
  2. Once published, we will have a competition to see which songs make it to the next round. You will vote for your favorite song(s) by donating $1 for each song you select that week. We will do that each week, narrowing down the choices until we get to the final round. We will be using these songs throughout the rest of the year in addition to those that are chosen by the worship committee.
  3. The grand champion will be revealed in the final round.

So when is Hymnal Madness coming?

We hope to start it at the beginning of Lent, so get your initial submissions into church@newdaylutheran.org by Wednesday March 5. Look for an email from Theresa that will have a list of the songs from our hymnal.

Cash or check will be preferred method of payment for this. Contact Pastor for questions.

This is a joint event with St. Luke's this year. All proceeds will benefit California wildfire victims Bob Honeychurch and Sylvia Sweeney, retired episcopal priests. Signups for servers, cooks, etc., are in the parish hall on the coffee bar. WE REALLY NEED PEOPLE TO SIGN UP TO COOK AND TO BE GREETERS AND TO CLEAN UP

ANOUNCEMENT!

Luther Heights Bible Camp is thrilled to announce Maddie Glanz as our new Camp Director! Maddie has been an integral part of LHBC as Program Director and Program Innovation Lead over the past two years, building strong connections with youth, families, and volunteers. Her passion for outdoor ministry began during her four years at Camp Shalom in Iowa and has grown through her year-round roles with LHBC.

Maddie and her husband, Zach, have two little ones, Remy (1.5 years) and Banks (5 months), who are sure to share their parents’ love for the mountains and camp songs!

“This is my dream job,” Maddie shares. “I believe God made me to lead a camp ministry that empowers kids and families to see their uniqueness celebrated by God’s people in God’s special place in Creation.”

Committed to safety, growth, and the mission of LHBC, Maddie has played a key role in our recent American Camp Association recertification. She looks forward to continuing LHBC’s legacy, creating lasting camp families, and witnessing God’s love transform all who visit the mountains and those who support us from the valleys below.

Congratulations, Maddie!
