FROM PASTOR ANN

I attended worship in Palm Springs this past Sunday while on vacation. As Pastor Tim was preaching, I was thinking of my vacation time & how nice it's been to not have any major responsibilities. I want to have shelters built, just as Peter mentioned, so I can just stay and take in the scenery & serenity of it all... To sit in the glory of all that God has created.

I don't always experience that closeness to God when I allow so many things to pervade my thoughts and keep me from loving others as I'm called to do. That can be work... Hard work... And I can't do it on my own. I need the transformative power of Jesus to help me do that. As I'm just finishing up my vacation, I'm looking forward to seeing those glimpses of the holy in our everyday lives, knowing that God shows up, even when things are hard, when we're distracted, when we're hurting, when we're angry, when we're sensing despair. And God is there with us in our joys & celebrations, too. Are we seeing & seeking God in all of it? As we head into Lent, remember, that you are not alone. And remember, you are a beloved child of God, and you can remind others of that as well.

Bible Study

Deuteronomy 26:1-11

“When you have come into the land that the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance to possess and you possess it and settle in it, you shall take some of the first of all the fruit of the ground, which you harvest from the land that the Lord your God is giving you, and you shall put it in a basket and go to the place that the Lord your God will choose as a dwelling for his name. You shall go to the priest who is in office at that time and say to him, ‘Today I declare to the Lord your God that I have come into the land that the Lord swore to our ancestors to give us.’ When the priest takes the basket from your hand and sets it down before the altar of the Lord your God, you shall make this response before the Lord your God: ‘A wandering Aramean was my ancestor; he went down into Egypt and lived there as an alien, few in number, and there he became a great nation, mighty and populous. When the Egyptians treated us harshly and afflicted us, by imposing hard labor on us, we cried to the Lord, the God of our ancestors; the Lord heard our voice and saw our affliction, our toil, and our oppression. The Lord brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm, with a terrifying display of power, and with signs and wonders; and he brought us into this place and gave us this land, a land flowing with milk and honey. 10 So now I bring the first of the fruit of the ground that you, O Lord, have given me.’ You shall set it down before the Lord your God and bow down before the Lord your God. 11 Then you, together with the Levites and the aliens who reside among you, shall celebrate with all the bounty that the Lord your God has given to you and to your house.

Romans 10:8b-13

But what does it say?

“The word is near you,

in your mouth and in your heart”

(that is, the word of faith that we proclaim), because if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For one believes with the heart, leading to righteousness, and one confesses with the mouth, leading to salvation. 11 The scripture says, “No one who believes in him will be put to shame.” 12 For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; the same Lord is Lord of all and is generous to all who call on him. 13 For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

Luke 4:1-13

Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness, where for forty days he was tested by the devil. He ate nothing at all during those days, and when they were over he was famished. The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become a loaf of bread.” Jesus answered him, “It is written, ‘One does not live by bread alone.’ ”

Then the devil led him up and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world. And the devil said to him, “To you I will give all this authority and their glory, for it has been given over to me, and I give it to anyone I please. If you, then, will worship me, it will all be yours.” Jesus answered him, “It is written,

‘Worship the Lord your God,

    and serve only him.’ ”

Then the devil led him to Jerusalem and placed him on the pinnacle of the temple and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here, 10 for it is written,

‘He will command his angels concerning you, to protect you,’ 11 and ‘On their hands they will bear you up, so that you will not dash your foot against a stone.’ ”

12 Jesus answered him, “It is said, ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’ ” 13 When the devil had finished every test, he departed from him until an opportune time.

EVENTS & INFOS

Bring your neighbor, your family, your friends, and come have pancakes with us!

We were hoping to kick this off for Lent. We are going to extend the deadline for initial submissions to the 9th. Pastor will explain this more at church. Are there questions on this contest? Are you interested but not sure how it works? Let us know! We want everyone to participate in this!

Hymnal Madness: A competitive format that pairs hymns in a tournament-style structure. It's a fun way to engage in music!

We are going to have a tournament as a fundraiser this year! You'll get to decide where the funds go, too. Here is how it will work:

  1. You choose your favorites to go on the "board." The first submissions are FREE and the top 32 songs will be added from them.
  2. Once published, we will have a competition to see which songs make it to the next round. You will vote for your favorite song(s) by donating $1 for each song you select that week. We will do that each week, narrowing down the choices until we get to the final round. We will be using these songs throughout the rest of the year in addition to those that are chosen by the worship committee.
  3. The grand champion will be revealed in the final round.

So when is Hymnal Madness coming?

We hope to start it at the beginning of Lent, so get your initial submissions into church@newdaylutheran.org by Wednesday, March 5. Look for an email from Theresa that will have a list of the songs from our hymnal.

Cash or check will be the preferred method of payment for this. Contact Pastor for questions.
