Creatures of the Night Hide & Seek
Can you find what goes bump in the night? In this self-guided activity, we're challenging you to find several nighttime creatures of South Dakota! Just hike the trails at participating state parks and Outdoor Campuses, keeping your eyes open for the informational signs and hidden nocturnal animal pictures along the way. Find them all and email us the secret code words to enter the prize drawing!

SUBMIT YOUR ENTRY:
Be sure to include your selfie, the five code words, your name and address, and the participating location's name.

HOW TO PARTICIPATE:
Snap a selfie with the rules sign at the beginning of the trail. Include all members of your group; you get one entry for each person in the photo!
Explore the trail to learn fun facts about five different nocturnal (nighttime) creatures of South Dakota.
Expose the animals hiding nearby. A flashlight may help!
Keep track of the code words found on each animal sign and email them with your selfie to [email protected] for a chance to win that location's prize package! Entries must be submitted on or before Nov. 1, 2020. The activity may remain available beyond the contest end date in some locations.
PIERRE AREA PARTICIPATING LOCATIONS:
Farm Island - Farm Island Nature Trail. Start at the wood gate and proceed down the trail. Take a right at the first junction which will loop around and bring you back to where you started. Take another right to head back to the trailhead.
LaFramboise Island - Forest Trail Loop. Start at the kiosk near the green gate for a map with all the trail name
PRIZES:

Feeding South Dakota -   Mobile Food Pantry Distribution
Mobile Food Pantries travel across South Dakota distributing free food to individuals and families in need. These distributions supplement the work of agency partner pantries, shelters and meal sites operating in fixed locations. The Mobile Food Pantry Program began in January of 2013 and is now serving 45 of the most underserved communities where individuals and families lack access to adequate and nutritious foods.
Each family receives approximately 30-70 pounds of fresh and frozen produce, dairy, meat, breads and other non-perishable food items. The type of food distributed varies depending on what is available at the current time.
Eligibility: Must bring a photo ID.
Dates and times are subject to change.

Eagle's Gallery Art Event to Honor WWII Heros
SD)-"The Eagles Gallery" featuring the aircraft flown by four highly decorated South Dakota WWII veterans will be unveiled at a public ceremony held at the Pierre Regional Airport, Friday, October 16 at 4pm Central.

The four art pieces, created by South Dakotan artist, writer and filmmaker John Mollison, will honor the two South Dakotan "Doolittle Raiders," Distinguished Flying Cross recipient Harold Thune, father of Senator John Thune, and Navy Cross recipient, Curtis Cameron. The art will accompany the existing art honoring Battle of Midway hero, John Waldron.

The Pierre-Fort Pierre Rotary Club is sponsoring The Eagles Gallery. Club President, Ann Schwartz, stated "Rotary's motto is Service Above Self. The men whose airplanes and stories will be displayed in The Eagles Gallery embodied that motto and represent the extraordinary actions of South Dakotans who responded and continue to respond to the call of service. Our Club is proud to support this effort."

Pierre Airport Manager, Cameron Howard stated, "An especially interesting aspect of these stories is that they each have a connection to the Pierre/Fort Pierre area. When people go through the airport and take a quick look, they'll know of our community's amazing heritage."
Artist John Mollison believes in the power of history. "History is nutritious as it feeds our understanding of how we work. If we know our history, we can better guide our future. These airplanes represent moments that affect all of us in some way today."

The unveiling will begin at 4pm and feature a special gallery installment of Curtis Cameron's actual Navy Cross by the Cameron family. An additional aspect of the unveiling will be the inauguration of a multimedia display produced by the South Dakota Air and Space Museum designed to broaden the impact of South Dakota's contribution to the Doolittle Raid of April
18, 1942.
