The Eight annual South Dakota Kite Day is Wednesday, June 12, 2019 at Hilger's Gulch in PIerre, South Dakota. The event, being held from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Central Daylight Time. The event is by Pierre Elks Lodge No. 1953, NextEra Energy Inc, and South Dakota Wind for Schools. Children ages 14 and under, are encouraged to attend. The first 400 children will receive a free kite and plenty of space to have fun with no trees. Elk's members will be available to hand out kites, offer assistance in putting them together and getting them to fly. Parents also are encouraged to get involved and volunteers are always welcome to help. There is no registration fee. But children are encouraged to register by going to the Elks' Facebook page. One Book South Dakota Authour Kent Nerburn will discuss his book "Neither Wolf no Dog", answer questions about it and sign copies of the book. Copies of the book will be sold at the event. One Book South Dakota is a program of the South Dakota Humanities Council to encourage South Dakotans to read and discuss the same title. Everyone is welcome to attend the free program, hosted by the South Dakota Historical Society Foundation and local book clubs.

Brenda Donelan A Storyteller Tells Her Tale Brenda Donelan is a local author who writes mysteries set in South Dakota. The seventh book in her University Mystery Series will be released this summer. She incorporates her past employment as a social worker, probation officer, investigator, and college professor into all of her books.

Local singing group, Surprise Package, is teaming up with Relay for Life to put on a benefit concert. The Concert will be held on June 14th at 7:00 PM at the Lutheran Memorial Church in Pierre. The concert is free admission with a free will donation taken during the concert with all money going toward Relay for Life and the American Cancer Society. Bring your family and friends, listen to some music, and help raise money for all of those battling cancer.

The 2nd Annual Run with the Govs road race (run/walk) will be held Saturday, June 15th in conjunction with the Trail of Governor's statue unveiling on Friday, June 14th. Full race information can be found on the website. Check-In is from 7:15-8:15 a.m. Race starts at 8:30 a.m.

Dr. Murray Thompson A Hometown Boy & A Story of Service A Pierre native, Dr. Thompson is a full time dentist and is also currently Commander of the SD Army National Guard Medical Command. From serving on a nuclear base to activation for flood duty in Pierre/Ft. Pierre to deployment in Afghanistan, Dr. Thompson has many experiences to share.

We will be having a balloon* launch in memory and support of those affected by this disease. Orders are due by Wed, June 12 and the release will be Fri, June 21 at 12:45pm at Edgewood. If you're not able to join us but would like to purchase balloons we will by happy to release in their memory. 1 balloon is $10 or a 3 balloon bouquet for $25.

South Central Handgunner's is hosting the Annual Bowling Pin Shoot on June 23. Come out with the entire family and shoot or watch. The event is open to everyone. Registration begins at 8:30 AM and shooting begins at 9:00 AM. The stages to shoot are: Open .22, Limited .22, Ladies .22, Youth .22 (Ages 10-17), Open Auto, Limited Auto, Shotgun, Revolver, Single Action Revolver, 9X9 (9mm Handgun), .22 Rifle, and PCC (Pistol Caliber Carbine). Remember Eye and Ear Protection Required for Everyone both Shooters and Bystanders. Safety Always Comes First.
