Matthew 25 In Action: Celebrating Women of Faith and Justice

Honoring Women’s History Month Through the Voices of Faithful Leaders

The Matthew 25 Initiative invites us to engage deeply in the call of Christ found in Matthew 25:31–46—to live lives prioritizing compassion, justice, and community. This year, in celebration of Women’s History Month, we turn our focus to three dynamic leaders within the Synod of the Northeast and wider Presbyterian Church whose stories embody the Initiative’s three core focus areas:

  • Building Congregational Vitality
  • Dismantling Structural Racism
  • Eradicating Systemic Poverty

Through a series of interviews, we hear from Rev. Dr. Eileen Lindner, Rev. Karen Hernandez-Granzen, and Rev. Holly Haile Thompson, each of whom brings a distinct perspective shaped by their lived experience, faith, and leadership.

Rev. Dr. Eileen Lindner:

A Legacy of Leadership and Civil Rights

For Rev. Dr. Eileen Lindner, Women’s History Month is a time to uncover stories too often left untold—particularly those of Black women and immigrant women. She reminds us that women were central in the gospel story, from bearing the Christ child to proclaiming his resurrection.

A defining moment in her life came during the Civil Rights Movement, when she was arrested at a demonstration in Georgia. The following day, Andrew Young—then of the National Council of Churches and later a U.S. ambassador—came to bail her out. That connection sparked decades of collaboration and reaffirmed her calling to racial justice and Christian unity.

Her advice?

“Draw strength from your sisters… but don’t exclude your brothers. Work as if everything depends on you but pray as if everything depends on God.”

Rev. Karen Hernandez-Granzen: A Call to Transformative Justice

As a Latina pastor, Rev. Karen Hernandez has faced doubts about her calling—often from those who questioned whether women were meant to preach. But through her call story and unwavering faith, she found the strength to lead boldly.

A turning point in her ministry came after reading The New Jim Crow by Michelle Alexander, which opened her eyes to the impact of mass incarceration. That inspiration led to the Trenton Microloan Collaborative, a project that supports formerly incarcerated entrepreneurs with funding and mentorship. With backing from a Synod innovation grant and the Lilly Endowment, the initiative has already helped 15 individuals rebuild their lives.

Her encouragement?

“Find your people—your community, your supporters—and lean on them. Change doesn’t happen in isolation.”

Rev. Holly Haile Thompson:

Faith Rooted in Identity and Justice

The first Native American woman ordained in the PC(USA), Rev. Holly Haile Thompson offers a powerful voice on identity and resilience. “Everything I’ve had to do,” she reflects, “has to do with being a Shinnecock Indian and a woman.”

One defining moment was her first day at a predominantly white church, where she was condescendingly referred to as a “girl.” Rather than allowing such experiences to deter her, Rev. Holly Haile Thompson anchors herself in the truth that her call is divine, not human.

Her charge to others?

“Be courageous. Model your path after women you admire. Don’t give up hope. You are in those spaces for good news and for justice.”

A Living Testament to Matthew 25

These three women exemplify what it means to live out the Matthew 25 Initiative—not just through programs or projects, but through presence, resistance, and resilience. Their lives and ministries remind us that the work of building the Beloved Community is ongoing—and that women have always been at the forefront of that work.

As we reflect on their stories this Women’s History Month, may we recommit ourselves to honoring the contributions of women past and present, and continue building a church that reflects God's vision of justice, inclusion, and love.

The interview was conducted by Dr. Nichol Burris | Administrative Coordinator

Visioning Process Update March 2025

The Visioning Process is underway, with small groups working diligently to prepare their presentations for the Town Hall meeting scheduled for April 22. Each group is clarifying its future goals and developing clear quarterly objectives to present the proposed vision at the Synod meeting on November 15, 2025, at First United Presbyterian Church in Amsterdam, NY. These objectives will guide the groups' efforts in the months leading up to this important presentation. The small groups are led by members of the Discernment Team, along with moderators, working group conveners, and staff. Their work is focused on the seven pillars that will form the foundation of the draft for the new vision.

The Visioning Process team has planned two key meetings on July 22-23 and August 25-27. These events will provide opportunities to deepen discussions and refine strategies as we approach our long-term goals. Additionally, the small groups are actively seeking opportunities to meet with presbyteries and special interest groups to discuss the seven pillars of our vision. These conversations will be crucial for gathering feedback and ensuring broad-based support for the Visioning Process.

In April, the Synod will distribute a set of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) to help clarify the process and address common inquiries. To keep everyone informed and engaged, a dedicated page on the Synod website will be launched, featuring regular updates and resources related to the Visioning Process. We are excited about the progress made so far and encourage everyone to stay involved as we move forward. Please mark your calendars for the Town Hall meeting on April 22; we look forward to hearing your thoughts and ideas as we continue shaping the future of the Synod together.

Stony Point Center 75th Anniversary Celebration Weekend

In celebrating Stony Point Center’s past while leaning into the present needs of the social justice and congregational groups who meet here, we are planting the seeds for the future…together.

Anniversary Celebration

Fri, 4/4, 3 pm to Sun, 4/6, 1 pm

Seventy-five years ago, the Gilmor Sloane sisters, faithful Presbyterian pastor’s kids and social justice supporters, gifted their grounds to the Presbyterian Church. The sisters had used their home to host global mission co-workers for gatherings of renewal, sharing, and learning and passed their property on so the work could continue. Let’s commemorate the good works done at this storied retreat center!

Come celebrate, reminisce, get inspired, and equip yourself to be the best help you can be in this time of crisis for so many. We begin with dinner & storytelling/music-making on Friday, continue into Saturday with meditation, the Social Justice Summit, closing with a gala that night. On Sunday, we will worship together & dedicate a new memorial grove, capping it all off with a brunch where it all began…at the Gilmor Sloane House.

During our weekend celebration, we are excited to invite you all into a Social Justice Summit on Saturday where those in active nonprofits will join us for networking and empowerment in this time of great need for social justice action. What better way to celebrate a center (SPC) with a 75 year history of social justice than by engaging social justice empowerment as part of our celebrating the impact of Stony Point Center? You all will be a part of empowering social justice now.

*Freewill donations welcome. Space is limited. Registration required ahead of time. First come, first served.

Virtual participation will be available for portions of the weekend, so you can still be a part of it if we are full for the in-person portion.  Zoom link for 7:30 pm Friday Songs and Stories at the Penguin Rep Theater and 7 PM Anniversary Gala – https://zoom.us/j/97006077836
