The New Alarm Industry

I have mentioned that the New Alarm Industry is part of my vision for the future. It includes new technologies of today and tomorrow and all that the New DICE is incorporating into our products and services for our industry.

We have included this in our roadmap for the future because we realize that if the industry does not keep up with these new technologies, it will be left behind. New technologies such as Interactive Video Services, Artificial Intelligence, and the Cloud are opening new opportunities and new services that provide growth and a potential lead over competition.

Artificial Intelligence is the buzz word today and video surveillance is adding more and more complex video analytic features such as facial recognition, gunshot detection, occupancy detection, people counting, loitering detection, perimeter detection, fall detection – the services are becoming unlimited. Video can be used beyond security such as improving business management and operations as well as studying consumer behaviors.

The Matrix Open Platform: Easily Choose Virtually Any AI Analytics Provider

Why Matrix? One reason is that Matrix Interactive is an open platform and has integration with virtually all Artificial Intelligence (AI) providers.

Matrix offers its own AI analytics that provides person detection and vehicle detection. We will be adding many other AI options in the near future.

In addition, you can also choose many other analytic providers. Third party software, integrated into Matrix can provide gun detection, facial recognition, shoplifting, loitering and much more. The system includes area of interest and scheduling. Some of our AI partners inlude Actuate, Calipsa, Cawamo, Corsight, Iron Yun, Rhombus, Sentry AI, and Veesion.

In addition, changing AI providers in Matrix is easy. No longer do you have to program every camera. You can easily choose and change with just a few clicks.

The benefit of AI is that systems are now smart enough to analyze, understand and prioritize the video, along with the level of priority. That level will determine if the video alarm goes to an end user, a central station operator and/or recorded. 

Using Matrix combined with video analytics makes surveillance systems more efficient, reduces false alarms, decreases the workload on security guards and operators and gets rid of the “video garbage” that you don’t need by making video more intelligent. It provides end users with better security and important business management information. 

In addition to AI integration, the Matrix open platform integrates with almost every video camera, DVR and NVR. Plus, even if you are using another automation software, Matrix integrates with all other automation platforms, so no need to change software.

The Reality of the POTS Sunset

POTS is Plain Old Telephone Service that has been around for the over a century. The messaging in the industry is that there is a sunset when it comes to copper POTS lines.

But that is not the reality. The truth is that many Local Exchange Carriers (LECs) will continue providing POTS into the future. In fact, they are already using the newer digital POTS equivalents that already support most POTS lines transitioned from copper to digital.

Rather than rushing the replacement of legacy alarm systems at every subscriber site, the alternative is for central stations to use the services of a telecom service provider, such as IPtelX, that supports direct call media, has specifically configured a national SIP network for the same, and has implemented trunk groups with many other carrier networks around the country that can directly peer calls to and from their endpoints.

A sunset of old technology is always inevitable but will not necessarily happen tomorrow as in the case of POTS and the legacy alarm, fire, and PERS systems. Forcing change faster than it needs to happen can have the consequence of creating unnecessary attrition in the industry. 

Telecom carriers will continue to offer enhanced POTS with digital equivalents. That means that millions of legacy alarm systems can continue to be supported with minimal effort for the foreseeable future. Central stations and alarm dealers now have a choice.
