Some Differences Between Acting On Stage And On Film
We train as actors but how it is applied varies if it is for the stage or if it is for film. Stage acting is bigger, sometimes more exaggerated, and expects you to project to the back row. Film acting requires you to let the camera capture the subtle details of your expression and movements. Stage acting requires extensive preparation, where a play may come with a six week rehearsal time. Film acting often has no rehearsals, you arrive on set and are expected to have your lines memorized and your character thought out, and you roll. On stage, there is no net, you act and if you hit the "abyss" you can't call for lines (that was during rehearsal). With film there is the luxury of the "Cut," but you don't want to be "that" actor who holds up the shoot. Either way acting brings with it such divergent challenges. It is why we train.

The Actors Gym is taught by writer/producer/director Eric Nemoto (left in top photo montage). An actor himself with numerous stage and film credits, he is the founder of one of Honolulu's finest community theaters, TAG - The Actors' Group, the owner of Yellow Brick Studio, a production company that has produced 19 movies since 2014 (and represents 30 independent movies in total), and the developer of All Hawaii TV, a Roku TV public streaming channel dedicated to all things Hawaii. The Actors Gym is administered by the ADR Agency, one of Hawaii's top model and talent agencies for over 40 years. It has been owned since 1998 by Ryan Brown (second from left in top montage), whose years of experience has included working with the Miss Hawaii and Miss America organizations and their pageants. Ryan is the creator of the online subscription platform on which the Gym appears LIVE. Rick Bernico (second from right in top montage) is the owner of Hawaii Profiles, the photography studio in which the Gym is taught. Rick operates the four cameras and six microphones, along with a switcher that enables angle changes, which makes the Gym's scenes pop both visually and audibly. Lance Motogawa (right in top montage), is an advertising executive and the host of the radio show, Motogawa Music Entertainment (Hawaii Retro 97.1, Sundays, 8:00 am to 9:00 am). Lance will be lending his marketing experience to the Gym in order to reach a wider (hopefully worldwide) audience, targeting those who would want to tune in to a great class of actors having a great time in beautiful Hawaii! For more information about the Gym, hear Lance interview Eric (March 2nd, 2025), Ryan (May 25th, 2025), and Rick (July 6th, 2025) on his radio program. The Future Of The Actors Gym
Going LIVE is just part of the journey towards making the Gym the most innovative acting class anywhere. We will be pursuing the concept of enabling actors to participate virtually and either acting with other virtual actors, or, acting with actors who are physically in the class. Eventually, we'd like to invite actors from all over the world to submit self tapes for critiques. Basically, the Gym will embrace the Internet and attempt to make this little class being taught in the middle of the Pacific to be a place where people from around the world can drop in to learn and enjoy this wonderful craft called "acting." Stay tuned for more!
